Rome 10am. Wash and breakfast. Room, bath and nip Church of Bones. (Pantheon?) outside, Fountain.  Church of St.Paul, Tiber, Island, or Mont. Sleep. Engerfield.

 

Engerfield(?) St.Peters insdie and dome, glorious. Dinner, late Forum. (bronfckorsn?) and Forum and Coliseum, to top. Tea Y.M.C.A. and train 9.30.

Naples. Pompeii – dinner and music. Trams Church, Herculaneum and Vesuvius, wonderful, magnificent. Back Naples and dinner, train 10.30pm. Pretty crowded and weary trip.

 

Saturday 8th March 1919

Sal.gmch, Rome. In after 8,struggle to find a room. 9 line wash. Eggs at club. And with Mr Englefield by Gharry to Catacombs, Appian Way and Quo and adis, good drive. Afternoon to St.John (Lascran?) and Holy Shps, Santa. (old temple) Maria Angela, Spent evening waiting for bath.

 

Sunday 9th March 1919

Chased (arm?) Breakfast and with Mr Englefield Thracian Forum, Capitol Hill and model of Rome (yester Sun),  Palatine Hill, Palace of Caligula, late back. Dinner and almost wasted afternoon, Forum and Coliseum again. 5.30 to Miss Palmers, after tea, met Miss Brownrigg, yarned, photos, 9.45 train Miss Brownrigg saw us off. Fair trip. 5am Pisa, too dark. Wait till 6 train.

 

Monday 10th March 1919

Firenze. In by 9am. Chase round to Club, wash and room next door. Look at Cathedral (bare) and found party in St. Marks. Old monks abode and Cloisters, and museum armour, glass frescoes. Tea at (am?) Y.M. and after tea at Club and up hill for view, fine church. Good dinner and this, am. Y.M.C.A., slept excellently.

 

Tuesday 11th March 1919

Florence (Firenze) - Up 8am, breakfast Hotel, 2 eggs and coffee. Party from Club to Pitti Palace, glorious paintings, Great Masters, miniatures. Shrine to Virgin. Town Hall late of Medici and climbed tower, view over Florence. (Comdn?) am. Y.M. Party to St.Marco again. Frescoes, Cloisters and Cells, manuscripts books. Freso media, Palazzo Riccardi, Old Cathedral (Baptisms.) and new Cathedral, bronze doors. Museum St.Maria del Fiore, singing Boys, Medici Chapel, Coloured marbles, (Echo, Soho?) Tea at Club, bought pcs.(pictures) Tea, to Y.M. am. Got packs, to train. Slow and uncomfortable. Wait and change 6am, Bologna – crowded, slow and weary. Venezia about 2pm.

 

Wednesday 12th March 1919

Venice. Steamer to St.Marks and found Y.M.C.A. wash and eggs. Look round Doges Palace, Bridge of Sighs, all pictures gone. Dinner Hotel, to am. Y.M.C.A., walk, cup of coffee and bed.

 

Thursday 13th March 1919

Venice. Out 8am, packed and breakfast. King’s Palace, inside St.Marks, all mosaic and climbed Campanile in lift. Walk and back to lunch, run in Gondola. Grand Canal and back way home, tried my hand, walk to Gardens, under Clock Tower, crowded. Bought pictures. Dinner at Hotel, out for bit of a stroll. Got kit and by steamer to train 10.30pm for Milan.

 

Friday 14th March 1919

Milan. 7am, got room, wash and to town. Walked outside and inside Cathedral and saw Museums, found Mr Palluchinini’s but out. Am. Y.M.C.A., back to hotel, lunch. To Mr Pelluchini’s, walked to Park and Fort, galleries closed. Dozed on grass in sun. Arch of Peace, me Mr Pelluchini and 5pm after tea and make dinner. Pictures, and look at Cinema. Walked to hotel.

 

Saturday 15th March 1919

Turin. Up 6am, train 7.45am, nice run to Turin. Breakfast 11am. Kit and wash at Restaurant. Dinner – Down to River, lovely day. Kits and train. Cup of tea and off 4pm. Off, glorious run through mountains. Snow at Modane. Tea and seats for Paris and to train 9 – no luck.

 

Sunday 16th March 1919

Turin / Paris – up at 7am. And to train. Snack Y.M.C.A. and good run home by 4pm. Tea Sisters. Got bed, changed and to dance ‘J.’

 

Monday 17th March 1919

Wimereux. Sister Willams, British and Suzanne Good supper. Bed 11.30 cool.

 

Tuesday 18th March 1919

Wimereux. To wharf with Sisters and to D.D.M.s re warrant. After repacked and did (aks?) Suzanne and tea. Tried get Tunic 14G.Hp. 8pm showered, pack, &c and to Nobbs &c. Bed 12pm. Cool.

 

Wednesday 19th March 1919

Wimereux/ London. Got Tunic and took bag and EMO, saw Matron and see on boat. Rang up from Pay Office, went round saying adieu. Brush(?) (breakfast?) from Mess, Peachey and I to boat, Sergeant of E.M.O. saw me aboard.

Trip London 8.30., feed and bedroom, wrote 4 notes.

 

Thursday 20th March 1919

H.Q. Met Docs(?) found (‘m’ n’) at Norbury. Tea and walk.

 

Friday 21st March 1919

London. Took Kings to Peel House, wrote home to Club and posted. Rang up, no luck. After tea Buffet. Peel House supper and dance about 2.

 

Saturday 22nd March 1919

London. Called Jonas, in City but out. Dinner and to Norbury, saw motor in shed. Snowy and cold. Walked and rode to town. Good dinner and music, yarn at ‘Popular’ – walk and saw (‘m’?) on tram and back Peel House at 11pm.

 

Sunday 23rd March 1919

London. Hoss(?) and I came to town and I to Jonas 1pm. Good lunch and yarn and yarn, very pleasant. Rang up Soph. To Holborn Empire. Pgmme (Programme?) Supper.

 

 

Monday 24th March 1919

London. Met Soph 11.15am, cup of tea and a yarn. Dinner and met Mollie 2.30pm, to National Gallery and through Italy trips. Tea in town and then waited ‘Boy’ really bright and pretty, walked across Bridge and then tube to Peel. Bed 12.15.

 

Tuesday 25th March 1919

London. Up 7.30am and to War Chest 9.5, no postcards. With party to Windsor Castle, St.George’s Chapel, Rooms, Stables, Italian Garden. Lunch and (Bc Pc?) from Princess Alice. Look at Eton and class rooms. In 6.30pm, wash, dinner.Notes Char and EmE – 6.

 

Wednesday 26th March 1919

London. Bit late, but found Laurie Allibon at Hp (Hospital?), Wandesworth, yarn. Via Clapham to Norbury, lunch – Mollie gone tea 2pm. And by 3pm bus to Reigate, great run 10m. London. Called for letters, lunch with Jonas, met Mollie, Queens Hall and to see Warner, yarn and photos. Strolled around. Sudden storm and sleet. Cup of coffee and to Coliseum – Russian Ballet and June Vanbrugh in ‘Half an Hour’ to No.89 and home 12pm. Bath, cold in head last few days.

London. To town late and chasing round after Barry S. and brought bag out. Changed and to Sophie’s at Notting Hill Gate. Mrs Williams (Dorothy Williams) and another, also Mr and Mrs Brown and Mrs Isaacs and son. Good dinner and through my photos and Italy trip, quite good evening and to Peel by 12pm.

London. Out 8am but delay. Breakfast, bed ticket &c. Had been heavy fall of snow, sloppy. To War Chest, note from Charlie. To Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey. Dinner War Chest. To Albert Hall ‘Hiawartha’ great, in a box, and then D. (blank space?) took us to Mrs Griffiths for tea, A1. War Chest 8pm, dinner. Found Chevrons Club, but no good. To Peel, tea and bed.

London. Late breakfast and wash. 9 received. To War Chest. Lunch, up to Park, walk round, called Jonas 4pm and again 5pm. Tea with Harry and yarn Mr J, to (?) for coat and waited Drury Lane for Gallery to Samson & Delilah, stood, feet weary, row with old chap on gang way. Fine show and Edna Thornton very good. Walk and supper Peel House.

London. Very wakeful, out 6.45am, shave, paid Hazell till 23rd. Breakfast Peel. Bus in rain, then tram to Norbury. Left in Car 10.40am, light rain, lunch Maidstone, really good. Tip top run to Margate, by 4.15pm. Afternoon tea at Mrs Poole’s. For stroll and then dinner 7pm. (‘m’) walk along cliff. Sm(?) and Harry to Pictures. Coffee in their room. Slept A1.

 

Friday 11th April 1919

London. Lovely day, breakfast 9am. Ede and I 5m to Broadstairs, quite sunny and warm, tram back. Lunch 1.30pm. Down on beach and read, wind cool. Harry took a photo. Dinner 7pm. Then along beach under cliff on sands – in 10.20pm. Slept well.

 

Saturday 12th April 1919

London. Shave, breakfast 9am. Raining, Mollie and I sat in shelter and read and cigar. Sun out and stroll, met Em and Harry in town. 3pm Mollie and I train to Ramsgate Harbour, tea, walk round bit and tram back. Walk after dinner on Ships. T (shorthand).

London. Breakfast 9.30am. Lovely and sunny. Sat on Front and then to town. Mollie and I re trains, after 3pm. For Westgate, rain storm. After tea, then fine walked back behind Margate, heavy rain, but wet, in 6.30pm. Shave and tea, sat a bit and then (‘m’) along sand. (shorthand) in 10.30pm, slept well.

 

Monday 14th April 1919

London. Raining. Packed and left 11am for train, Ede came along, to Dartford by 2.30pm. After my sandwiches, some decent bits of country and waterside, Car to Hp, found Nell and Dora, yarn and (then?) to dinner, Cols No.20.Yarn in sitting room, 1other. Nell and I for a bit of stroll and back to (t?) (shorthand) and slept in Ward.

 

Tuesday 15th April 1919

London. Bath and breakfast, Sergeants Mess. In sitting room Nell and I walked town, sat in Park, lunch and coming back in rain, sheltered in old mill for an hour, some hour, got pack and walk to train 4.15pm just. Saw Archdall and Mrs Macgillivray, just got my boots, letters (shorthand) Nell. Tea, Read at Peel.

London. Slept well, breakfast 10am. Pass for Weymouth, Nell and Dora (Lve?) at Les Gobelins. Lunch Shops, gloves Nell. Mrs Raymonds tea, taxi to x to War Chest and Peel. (shorthand) this 10pm, food. Slept.

London. Out 7am. G(24/2) Jeff. Breakfast, left washing and to Paddington by tube. Train 10.15am to Weymouth, lovely  morning and pretty country. Car out to MonteVideo, Sister McCormack, found Dave Murray and (Slon?).  Dinner, Sisters Mess, Jeff and I walked to train, coffee, waited two trains, car back, 11.30am. Slept Murray’s workroom. Heady.

London. Breakfast Sergeants Mess. 1030am tea Sisters Mess. Yarn, Miss Gardner turned up. Lunch. 5 by car to Sutton Points and to hill, lovely view. (smudge) &c and inland. Tea and walked back – Spring Head – Yarn, tea and bed. Read and slept A1.

Weymouth. Lovely bath, breakfast, read and this. Tea Sisters Mess, wrote Ede and Nell. Dinner mess, 2 o’clock  Miss Gardner and I walked to Westham, rugged and (drand?) Tea and long walk, missed train. In 7.30pm. Captain Thomas and Captain Vercoe at Sisters Mess. Good yarn, Sister Lucas, knows Saings.

Weymouth. Wrote Charlie. Helpted sandwiches. Read and dinner Sergeants Mess. 2 o’clock to town and 5pm by Charabanc to  (blank) Cove and a lovely spot. Tea, slowly ride back w/o McFadyen and Captain Thomas. 7pm supper Sisters Mess, music and cards.

Weymouth. Cool and breakfast late. This P home. Tea Sisters Mess. Wrote in sun Jeff and I saw Miss Gardner off at 2.10pm and walked to Bay and quay, wind. Sat and yarn on grass, tea and to Camp. After supper just going to have quiet yarn when Colonel McLean came in so cards. I tried and beginners . (shorthand) Very wakeful, thinking of things. (shorthand)

Got a lift for 12.15 train, lovely sun up, to Regents Square, wash and no letters, left flowers Mrs Jeffries and got bus to Norbury, but Harry hand c tyne. Letters in from holidays, had supper. Mollie in after 10pm. Wash up and saw me to tram 11pm, in 12.30.

London. Slept A1. Out at 9am, breakfast and (then?) at Peel House. Mollies (postcard?) at War Chest. Chasing round for pay and barney, and re Tona(?) Got snaps from Smythe. This and writing. Rang up Sophie and then the (Lunishead?) (Innes noad?) to Regent Square and then to Lower Sloane Street, and yarning, pretty awful, plain cup of tea. 11.30pm supper at Peel and to bed.

 

Thursday 24th April 1919

London. To 45 Sloan St, and with M. Innes noad(?) to see Pictures hour (met 2 Sisters and her brother-in-law) Pictures, but waste of time, got her cigarettes at H.Q. Dinner, picked up party and to Sir Ian Hamilton’s tea and concert. To Sophie’s 6.30pm and stayed to dinner, photos and yarn Dorothy.

London. Met Nell and Dora 10am, and got them places at Allicance  Co, opposite Australia House for March Past, very good. Lunch up town. They shopped, then to Kew Gardens, lovely. Tea at Corner Shop, awful wait. They changed and to reception at Australia House. I home.

London. Late breakfast, got washing and changed.11.55am to Dartford. Nell and I for bit of walk but wind and wet pretty awful. Afternoon tea did me good. Dozing and yarning. Dinner with girls. Wet cold ride on bus to Albert Hall, orchestral concert. Blizzard bus and tube to Peel House. Tea and read and wrote. Blowing snow.

London. Up 6.30am, shave &c. Breakfast, Peel House to Euston Station, 8.10 train to Holyhead, through lovely English country and North Wales scenery, mountains and sea. Cold trip by steamer to Kingstown, train to Dublin. Tea at Y.M.C.A. Walked up Sackville St, and chat Mr Campbell Y.M.C.A., brother Architect in Sydney. Wrote Charlie and E.M. to bed 10.30pm couldn’t sleep.

 

Wednesday 30th April 1919

Dublin. Up 7am, shave and wash. Breakfast and train 9.15am to Killarney, pretty but neglected country. Arrived 5pm, wash and walk. Cathedral and Castle excellent. Feed, beef first in two days. International Hotel, walked on my feet round town, up to front of Asylum, quite imposing. Yarn NZand then one in front Hall (dance 10.30pm) so to bed. Slept A1.

 

Thursday 1st May 1919

Dublin. Bath and breakfast, wet and cold, yarn9 and to see Procession Labour and bands (Irish Pipers), with 1 S.Af Sister and NZ officer. After lunch, damp but good drive to old Kirk ruin and view lake, along lake to Ross Castle and up Keep. Cromwell captured from (water? Wafer?) Lovely Parks of Earl Kinmare. Dinner, stroll and yarn.

 

Friday 2nd May 1919

Dublin. Slept well. Breakfast and with two Canadian Sisters, Canadian Corporal and Yank drove in rain, Kate Kearney’s cottage, rode through Pass of Dunloe(?) and boat through lakes and rapid, Ross Castle and back 6.15, walk and this. After dinner with three Canadians to Muckross Abbey and Waterfall.

Dublin or Cork. Slept excellently. Breakfast.Yarn 9, Photos at Gap Dun(fre?) Stroll with Canadian Corporal to manor of Earls of Kinmare, burnt 6 years ago. Lunch and train 1.25pm Mallow and Cork. Tea at Y.M.C.A. Leader gave me a lot of information. Climbed Tower and chimes at old Protestant Church.Shorndon(?) Bath and bed at Metropole. Slept 6.nightmare.

Tea, chased R.T.O. and ship. Wrote Nell and Mollie. Bed.

Steamer at 9pm and good feed. Saw (in?) of Fire. Yarn New Zealander and to bunk. Slept fairly, in late.

Tram ride to Hilltown beyond and back. Jute Mills. Tea, got bed Waverley, walk and yarn Mollie postcard, Belfast. Had to ask sheets. Slept poorly.

Bed 11pm, slept well and comfy.

Dinner and front of drag drove 2.30 till 5pm, lovely afternoon. Wash and brush up and tea. Postcard t Anne, Kev (or Kew?). Walked to Nelson Mont, view, Bath and bed.

Birmingham. Yarn to Pat (Smithy), almost all day, 5pm took ‘Jock’ bit of a walk, warm and trees and nice. After tea Stanfields took me for a bit of a run in car. Model village &c.

Stratford-on-Avon. Look at Shakespeare’s House, Memorial and Marie (Conelle’s?), boats and punts, river and trees lovely. Look at Anne Hathaway’s Cottage and lunch at Lygon Arms. Broadway, old rooms and garden. Called on Mr and Mrs Humphreys, on through lovely country and to Mr Skinner’s, cottage and garden, delightful – tea and yarn and look round. Got back about 8.30pm, tea and yarn, music.

Yarned to Pat in sun and little Mrs Callander, 5 walked through town, crowds and decorations and back. Quiet and yarned.

London.  Cleared up and lent hand. Sat in sun and say Pat’s photos. (Pat Stansfield?), Wimereux, Paris, Rockies &c,&c. Then hurried lunch and to  train OK. 2.35pm and London 5.50pm. Country lovely and found Charlie at my room. Yarn, out dinner and walk and bus to look up Elis, Jeff. Yarn – Coffee.

London. Slept OK. Got breakfast at Peel, tunic tried on and got washing. Clearing up letters. To Peel House and wrote this up, lunch, wrote Patricia, Sister Shearer, Canada, and Mollie, drowsy and dozed. Tea and cake 6pm to room. Charlie there. I out to Peachey and back with Harry Downing. In 11.30pm.

London. To town late, HQ re Lt McCarthy for Sophie, spoke to Sister McIntosh and Sister Robinson. Also Buscombe and Smythe. Dinner, saw Charlie, sent cable Pater re (Bablow?). Bus to Sophie, not in,  and back long way. Afternoon tea, see Smythe.4.30pm – 5.30pm waited Jeff on (spec?) Home (Mang, Mary?) up. Shave and tea and there 8.20pm to Battersea Park and yarn. Supper at flat, tubes crowded, in 11.15pm.

Bus to Piccadilly, Charlie and then Sophie and Dorothy turned up and to afternoon tea at Trocadero – and music. Saw to bus. Wash and out to Norbury, no one at home. Note.

London. Breakfast, to  H.Q., Colonel Millard not in. Tried get sun, brooch. 10.45am at Victoria enquiring trains. Charlie, Jeff (Braddell?) and Kennedy came along, to Hampton Court look rooms, pictures and grape vine (1738). Boat and for row, and lunch on bank. Up above weir, Houseboats galore – boat leaked. 4 o’clock to Bushey Park, after tea, after row over wafer, See Rhododendrons, to Jeff’s, tea after bath, Miss (Julia) Johnne Jeff and I to tube and back. 5 (shorthand S-) and Charlie and I home 12pm.

London. Up 7.30am, breakfast, tube Waterloo Station 9.37am train to Camberley, 2 hours, country lovely, heat very oppressive. Barney met me, to house, yarn both, two girlies lovely. Dinner – yarn and my photos, after tea and hot walk Golflinks – saw horse fine. Tea and 8.31pm train, home 11pm.

Took Harry Downing to lunch and walked to Strand, from Adlwych Mr Campbell took us to Temple and Chapel, Knights Templar and Hall. Charlie and I to Sister Birks &c. yarn and cup of tea, in 11pm.

London. Up 7.30am, breakfast, paper and reported HQ and got till tomorrow 10am. Saw Charlie, w/o Austin and lunch, Mr Bland, home and packed. 12 o’clock sent reg – to Pat.6 o’clock to 89th, no one in. 2 (shorthand sentence) x This 8.30pm./.\ (letters?) Jeff and Mollie.

London. Breakfast and taxi to H.Q. left 11.30am to Waterloo train, 1 o’clock (ifc?) 4 amc. At Fovant 4.30pm very hot. Tea, bath, read paper and this. Jack Coliman, Dick Dash, T. McLean dinner. Wrote Jeff and Mollie till 11pm or so. Slept A1.

 

Friday 6th June 1919

Fovant. Parade 9.30am, Medical Inspection, Took postcards to village, saw French to train. Hospital train in. Slept and wrote Charlie P.O. w/o Austin and Moshi. Through village, concert.

 

Saturday 7th June 1919

Fovant. Up 7am, bath, shower, breakfast 8.30am Parade and General Rosenthal presented two M.C’. (Military Crosses) Tidied up and 11am S.M.O. asked if well. After dinner slept and (shorthand) Cup tea with Campbell and McLean. Tea 4 o’clock – walk through wood. Open Air Concert 6.30pm – couldn’t sleep.

 

Sunday 8th June 1919

Fovant. Missed Parade 9am sweeping up. Writing home and read paper. Note Charlie and Mrs Dexter and began (C.M.C.?) Tea 4pm, walk to see train off 5pm, Oliver Gill and Temperley. Then over to Hill round Roman Camp &c view and country superb. Back and yarn, cup tea and walk in wood.

 

Monday 9th June 1919

Fovant. Parade, reading, wrote E.M.E. – with Bill Squire (Square?) walked about 14 miles, through Didsbury (afternoon tea 2/8) to Wardour Castle and back through wood and lanes and Swallowcliffe. Maypole and crowd. Tea at Tipperary Hut, Fovant and to Camp 9.15pm, weary and to bed.

 

Tuesday 10th June 1919

Fovant. Slept till nearly 8am. Parade 9.30am. /.\ and then 8 letters – 2 Australia, G. & E.M.E. 3 Mollie. Dinner and this. Wrote Mollie, Tea, doze and to Post, just got it. In a.m. Lecture – Reconstruction Ideal  and woman. Cup tea and bed. Couldn’t sleep.

 

Wednesday 11th June 1919

Fovant. Out 8am. Parade, supervised Grease traps. Read, dinner, dozed and read all afternoon. Very warm. Wrote A.Kev.8pm Concert, wrote. Slept 6. (Bag …?)

Fovant. Out 8am. Parade long – Windy (shorthand) dozed and read. After tea mess meeting and took letter to post. Then Concert, writing and bed.

 

Friday 13th June 1919

Fovant. Out 8am. Parade and to get 11.35am train, changed and packed, gave in blankets and paid mess. With L/C to train, warm. Decent trip. To Victoria Station, left kit and to Belgian Square to report. Got kit and to Regents Square, clean up. Met Lance – tea – met Charlie, tram to Norbury,8.30pm.Yarn, supper. Washing and Mollie and I yarn in garden. Left 11pm, home 12.15.

 

Saturday 14th June 1919

London. Out 8.30am, breakfast, this and writing. At Victoria 2-5 saw young Smythe. Mollie 2.25pm bus and tram to Kew, Cannas, Carnations, hot houses.  Sat under trees and read my letters to her. Some tea, to Hyde Park Corner, walk, band, crowd and flowers, yarn, to Victoria Station 10.30pm and home.

 

Sunday 15th June 1919

London. Slept well, up 8.30am, breakfast, paper, back, shave and dressed. Two buses to Norbury 12.15 at back, Mollie and I yarn, showed postcards, were photo’ed by Harry and Mrs Dexter, excellent dinner and more garden fam(?) (found?) Japan books of Wal. Coffee, Badminton, tea excellent, garden, music, supper and left 10.30pm, in 12.15pm.

London Easy day, bath, read and wrote, to 20 Belgrave Square 4pm. And then to 36 Grosvenor Place – home. Charlie and I walk Embankment.

 

Tuesday 17th June 1919

London. 9.45am at 36 Grosvenor Place. Saw Corporal Allan and ladies there.”Morvada” via Suez for me. Lunch and 2.30pm at 89a, just Mollie and I, settled afternoon tea and strawberries. 8.30pm tea up town and this. Park.

 

Wednesday 18th June 1919

London. To 36 Grosvenor Place 9.30am, reading reports, chaps I had known. Lunch, and Reg. Down in and yarn. Off to Liverpool ‘Medic’ 2. Read some more, 4pm cup tea. Home, rested, Charlie in. I to 116 Cheyne Court. Jeff and Kennedy, yarn 9. And feasting and fun. Two cups tea and strawberries. Couldn’t sleep.

London. To 36 Grosvenor Place, read and read, lunch, dozed and back, read. Left 3.30pm draw Subsis, met Dick Dash. I to 89 a 5.20pm. Mollie and I tea and strawberries and yarn. 9pm to Bea, Weitzell re Sunday. Mollie to bus and I home. Slept fairly.

London. Wet day. To 36 Grosvenor Place till 12, to AIF HQ, draw £20 after saw O.C. Dinner, War Chest, looked for Charlie and then bumped him and Lance Addison. To work (I) very sleepy. Cup tea 4 o’clock. 4.30pm left, shave and to Mollie 5.15pm. Yarn, fun over ribbon, MSM, Tea and yarn and o and to Waterloo re Sunday. This. Altered plans, listed to lake, saw (shorthand) bus and I in 11.15pm.

London. Fine, then showery, fine again now. To 36 and yarned and wrote out imaginary reports. To HQ and to Victoria (rain), rang up Sophie, away. Lunch and bus and 2 chops Fovant. Bath, and slept.This x. Charlie in. Had tea and bit of a stroll Kings Cross way. Yarn Australian.

 

Sunday 22nd June 1919

London. Shave and for breakfast, tube to Elephant & Castle, Mollie there. Bea came and to Paddington and Maidenhead, long walk to boats and got one for 3 of -, over Boulders Lock, and rowed on. Lunch on Island. Bea full of life and fun, scared of worms and insects. Rest and to next Lock. Cliveden Woods, afternoon tea – and over lock and saw crowd, Train 7.50pm, in 10pm.

 

Monday 23rd June 1919

London. To 36 Grosvenor Place, lunch at Victoria, read most of time, home and shave, Charlie and I met Mollie ‘Plough’ and old W’s. Songs by all and nice supper, cigars and coffee, cool evening, at last away and home 12.30pm.

 

Tuesday 24th June 1919

London. To 36 Grosvenor Place, read, left note Jeff and met 1 o’clock, sent wire for her. Fed up at 3.15pm, started for Norbury, chat Mrs Dexter, wash at War Chest, met Harry Em and Ede at ‘Pops’ nice dinner and to “Maid of Mountains’ at Daly’s 1000th performance, in 11.15pm.

 

Wednesday 25th June 1919

London. Saw Captain Allen and then 20 Belgrave Square, papers, called Laurie Allibon, yarn, on to Jonas and lunch and yarn. Home, sleep and this 5 o’clock. Charlie in Dressed and to Jeff’s. Cut up tapers and lent hand cooking. Tea 8 o’clock Lt Ferguson and Thomas also there. Yarn and smoke. Home 11.25pm.

London. Met Harry Em and Ede 10.30am to Zoo, B cars A1, monkeys sections &c &c. 5 o’clock tea in town, then Pop, dinner. I heady. Ede and I to St.James’s Park, yarn, to Victoria by 10pm, 10.20pm slept 6.

 

Friday 27th June 1919

London. Took Seydlitz, breakfast, papers and haircut and this to bath. Dinner at Peel and out to Norbury, all went out by 5.15. Ede and I had tea and all evening to ourselves except for two knocks. Supper 9.30pm chop and toms. Left 10.30pm.

 

Saturday 28th June 1919

London. Breakfast and to HQ, met Sister Shearer 9.30am. Then to Fenchurch St, just 10.45 to Westcliff 12.10, Sophie out. Met Stan Laffs. Lunch and wash. Sophie and Dorothy yarn, walk and tea and yarn. 7.14pm train, crowds, bonfires and flags ‘Peace Signed’ Walked to Aldwych and on to Peel House, supper and bed 11pm.

London. Cup of tea – Lance turned up. Charlie and I to Hyde Park to Norbury by3 o’clock. Yarn, Harry looks revolver. Tea  5pm Ede and I to (Wraster?) Church. St.Margarets. Up Trafalgar Square, supper Corner House and to Victoria. Tube home 12pm.

 

Monday 30th June 1919

London. Reported Belgrave Square and Red Cross, after calling on Maxwell and Laurie. Then told Thursday go to H.Q. tell Charlie, met Donnelly,  Berkin, Magarey, Hewlett and Dorsch. Dinner, got shave and to 89a, and there for afternoon with Ede, yarn and tea. Dinner town. To Chelsea, Charlie there, but Jeff out. Yarning.

 

Tuesday 1st July 1919

London. Reported 20 Belgrave Square, again, got papers H.Q. and back, met Jeff and lunch at Govingis and up town and back on bus. Wash and met Ede at Brixton, her friend away, so to Bea’s, afternoon tea and yarn. Dinner and to “Uncle Sam” Ede’s shout, to 89a.

 

Wednesday 2nd July 1919

London. To Belgrave Square, and got papers for tomorrow. See Charlie, left pay book, dinner, wrote (Huxtable crossed out) home,(anwaker?) and Patricia. Drew Subsis. To 89a, Ede and I cup tea. She got me pin(?). Then tea and to “Cinderella Man’ poor, and to 89a, and ‘Good bye.’

 

Thursday 3rd July 1919

London. Breakfast at Salvation Army. Packed and fixed, Dinner Salvation Army. Wrote Colonel Huxtable, posted view to Edie. Taxi to Fenchurch Station, Charlie there and Jonas came. Fairly easy to Ship. Met Schnieder, Rid and Stores. Tea and cabin, for stroll, slept fairly.

 

Friday 4th July 1919

Tea, bath, breakfast. Yarn and this. With Schneider down the hold watching stowage, wrote some letters and read paper. After tea up to a Chemist, back to bunk. (shorthand) Nobbs.

 

Saturday 5th July 1919

Wrote some more letters. Met Captain Dinning at Railway. Officers inspecting, 12 up to Post and sent wire to Mollie. Lunch, some passengers and two ladies and two bairns. Gangway up 3pm, slowly out stern first, past lines of steamers, punts &c. 5 o’clock wait at Dock, note to Mollie, Watched steamers and shore. Dartford, Tilbury and Southend. Saw ‘Discovery’ artic ship outward bound.

Very quiet day, got slippers from store. Yarn all round. 3rd in cabin. Resting and reading, finished ‘Rough Road’ A1. Bill storeman and I stringed fiddle, look at troop decks. Yarn cooks.

 

Monday 7th July 1919

Breakfast 8am, after tea at 6 o’clock. Stroll and this. Yesterday dropped Pilot at Weymouth, last of England. Read all day ‘The Written Law’ Deck chair in sun.

 

Tuesday 8th July 1919

Still wonderfully smooth and fine, though not as sunny as yesterday. Passed Finisterre Cape 8am, but did not see it. Passed fleet of steam trawlers and few steamers. Gramophone cleaned by cook. Reading ‘A Man’s Life is Different’ by Maud Yardley. Long yarn and walk with Schneider, his 7 pics to enlist &c. Bath in Hosp.

 

Wednesday 9th July 1919

Lovely day. Began letter to Ede. Played with kiddies. 2.30pm passed Cape St. Vincent, cliffs &c and lovely colouring, reds and yellows, browns and greys, Cave and beaches and boats. Letter to Ede. Walk and yarn and read in bed.

 

Thursday 10th July 1919

Out 5.10am and found land both sides, called boys and Captain Dinning. Tea 6, in and out bed and 6.30 GIBRALTAR abeam, far off and cloud on its tops. (shorthand) Finished ‘A Vendetta in Vanity Fair’ by Esther Miller. After lunch, warm and weary and slept till 4pm tea and shave. Played with kiddies. Dinner, read and walk. Hot.

 

Friday 11th July 1919

Night and restless, out 7.30am on deck in breeze, 9 this. Read hard all day ‘The House on Cherry Street’ by Amelia E. Barr re old New York. Looked for kiddies but sultry and not on deck. Saw at tea. After dinner arguing re Cooks, Unions and Tariffs. Hot salt bath, rheumatism right knee and close.

Late breakfast, read. Warm then breeze. Passed island and lighthouse. Putting pictures in book, made decent job of it. Walk and yarn Holman. Passed island and lighthouse. Warm, slept fairly.

Very oppressive day, sat and read ‘The Story of Harvey Sinclair’ by George Trelawney, good. Passed to south of Malta noon, amused Bunty and Paper after breakfast. Very oppressive, close night, wakeful and knee aching.

 

Monday 14th July 1919

Hot and cool bath. With kiddies after breakfast. This up and wrote bit more to Ede, and to Harry  Kev. After tea (dinner) started on Trollop’s ‘Three Clerks.’ Very warm.

 

Tuesday 15th July 1919

Slept poorly. Knee ache and heat, out 7.45am. Read and invited to Deck Cricket and not bad. I made 8. After lunch read and this and wrote, Cricket with young Pavitt, watched match, passengers beat crew. 8pm concert and whisky.

 

Wednesday 16th July 1919

Port Said - Lovely day again, and breeze but warm. With kiddies and reading ‘Three Clerks’ Port Said 3.30pm Sent letters ashore. Too weary and stiff so stayed on board, though Peace Celebrations on.

 

Thursday 17th July 1919

Got out Kharki drill and put buttons &c on and lent Harry a suit. Dressed and ashore 4pm. Very sultry, found Australian Red Cross, yarn, walked round, cup tea and cake at beach. Harry buying, 9.30pm to ship, phosphorescence.

 

Friday 18th July 1919

Slept fairly, bath. Shifted to Cabin 39. Read and finished Trollope’s ‘Three Clerks’ at last. Watching boats &c. Yankee Destroyer 107. After tea Les and I to town, Red Cross, yarn, stroll. Got cigarettes and knife returned by him. Back 9.30pm. Read.

Slept (shorthand sentence) and shave, bath, breakfast and yarn. Read magazine (shorthand) Mollie of 7th. Advance Party on board, ready to shift burning ballast. Scribbled to Ede but couldn’t post, crowd all about. Worry re tea &c. Yarning.

 

Sunday 20th July 1919

Slept fairly, bath, breakfast again in Saloon, look round and this. Through pocket wallets for Em Warner’s address, found 20franc note. Wrote and enclosed in Ede’s, shave and dressed, couldn’t go ashore so read ‘Van Clive’ by Mary S. Watts all evening.

Bath and breakfast. Look round and read. Lunch read and dozed. Very hot. Moved off 3.30am for Kantara..

 

Tuesday 22nd July 1919

Morning and at Kantara 10am or so. Troops and gear came on board, no lunch, heat terrific. Moved again about 3pm. Tea Sergeants Mess. Shifted gear to 53. Bunk 10.30pm, couldn’t sleep, lay and perspired.

 

Wednesday 23rd July 1919

Heard stop at Suez. Up 6.30am, bath and out. Loafed about and read ‘Down on Swanee River’ Watched Coast. After tea Les brought me two (shorthand) and slept.

 

Thursday 24th July 1919

Better. Bath and breakfast Sergeant’s Mess. No breeze today. Mooched about, trying to keep cool. Night awful.

 

Friday 25th July 1919

Got nominal(?) Roll and made a start today, but heat intense. Sweating every time went to Sergeants Mess. Up for sponge over, slept it.

 

Saturday 26th July 1919

Passed Twelve Apostle Islands and Hells Gate. Reading, Left (doneups?) and feet puffed up, iodine. Bath and bed 10.30pm, cooler and slept fairly. Couldn’t work. Letter for Harry

Bath, breakfast, yarn and felt better. Dodged round a bit. Afternoon lay on bunk and read Ian Hay’s ‘The Right Stuff’ – missed tea, saw shoal of small porpoises, as if running along.

Awful night, glad to get out, felt done. Saw Molesworth about my puffed feet. Cal and salts. Some dinner, drank lot of tea. Yarn 9 re cases. Long roll, evening fresh breeze.

Better night, slept but up about three times. Some breakfast and this. Choppy sea and breeze. Running to back few times. Got pretty rough.

 

Wednesday 30th July 1919

Had to keep porthole shut and glad to get out. Felt good deal better, feet OK. And read ‘Polly Bishop’ by E.Temple Thurston. Got one report, yarning, read and fair night. Calmer, risked porthole open.

Slept late till 8am. Breakfast and wiped up. Read magazine. Fresh breeze but decent. Dinner and doze. Dodging along and writing Mollie. Coffee and yarn in 39.

Sultry night (Chief Steward ended music in Cabin 53). Bath and breakfast, yarn Sergeant Kett, saw Lieutenant Rouse re pay books. Dinner and this, drowsy dull and warm. Closed up letter to Mollie.

 

Sunday 3rd August 1919

Lovely morning and hooked on to buoy at Colombo about 1 o’clock. Very slow and crowded process but lighters took us ashore 4pm. Richardson, Wayling and I in gharry through native markets, to Cinnamon Gardens and English Quarter past Galle Face Hotel and Sea Front. Meal at Glove Hotel, rain. Len buying and had to go aboard. Rickshaws. Pretty weary and dozed, got Café au Lait.

 

Monday 4th August 1919

Due to go 12, left 4pm. Mooching about and felt pretty rotten. Charlie didn’t come, off City of Exeter. Took 1 Cal, some aspirin and salts. Feverish and then sweat.

 

Tuesday 5th August 1919  

Hardly slept, though knees better and head not so bad. Up about four times. Sponge over and dozed till 8am, drink of tea. On top deck in chair. Soup and tea. Dozed. This up (to date) Up to Holman’s cabin and yarn. Very bad night, knees and back aching.

 

Wednesday 6th August 1919 

At last daylight. Sponge over and drink of tea. Waited to see M.O. (Medical Officer) only ordered Sodic Sal. Weary and heavy, no appetite. Sweating after each time below, from weakness and up on deck and slept till 2pm then back awful, sat in chair and bed again, about 4 and slept to 7.30, out and sponge.

 

Thursday 7th August 1919 

Got my typed notices from Orderly Sergeant. Yarn to chaps in Pay Office. Australian horses and then work. Put my notices. Dozed after bit of lunch. Still weary and dull ache in head. Better night, shave and sponge over.

 

Friday 8th August 1919 

Feeling better, but still weak and weary. Had chair in Lobby and got few reports, which passed morning well. Slept heavily 2pm – 4pm. Cup of tea and biscuit and up on deck. Tea 5pm. Yarn Len Richardson in Cabin, his affairs and my album.

 

Saturday 9th August 1919 

Read, slept fairly, aches OK, but tossing about. Up 6.30am, bath and walk top deck. Couple more reports. Dinner and this. Lovely day and breeze. Rain this a.m. Doze, look round and tea. In cabin and yarn.

 

Sunday 10th August 1919 

Slept well, out 7.20am. Bit choppy today, head sea, only 255 miles. On top deck, read, dozed. Yarn young McKinnon, Balmain, re Twists &c.

 

Monday 11th August 1919  

Slept OK. Bath, walk top deck. Read magazine and doze, no reports. Dull head sea. 242 miles. Read and sleep till 4pm. This. Tea 5pm, about deck (shorthand)

Bath, sat in deck chair and read but no reports came along and slept and read, Holman lent me ‘Trail of Lonesome Pine’ and 8 o’clock Wood took me to Engine Room, shaft tunnel and stoke hole, noise and racing. And slept (shorthand)

Out 7.50am, smoother and sat in deck chair and read, no reports. And breeze cool. Dinner, read and slept. Tea, watched boxing, read and this. Cool and slept well.

Bath, walk and breakfast. Got few reports after dinner, doze and read. 2.30pm lay over boat deck and watched boxing and 7.30pm yarn to Holman in cabin and read, cool.

Bath, walk. Got few reports and read, finished ‘Kent Knowles Quahang’ by Joseph C. Lincoln, good and some boxing. Jug of tea and biscuits. Old Tapp yar 9 Kidman. Started ‘Wastrel’ This and (postcards?) Ede. Bit of funny concert. Read ‘Wastrel’

Papers, medical, Colonel re rheumatism. Lovely day. Good boxing from top. Met Miss Mckullarny? Wrote home and Ede.

 

Sunday 17th August 1919  

8am in bay at Fremantle, bit late up. Dressed after breakfast. Felt quite affected as came in. Band played. Hurried dinner and City of Exeter pulled out, waved and yelled to Charlie and got his note. Schneider and I sent wires, and to Perth, walk round, eggs for tea and back by 8.30pm.

 

Monday 18th August 1919  

Perth – Watched Fremantle fade away, Breeze quite cool. Read no reports, after dinner slept in sun on deck. Tried a m.c. for reports, no luck. After tea, walked and read. Didn’t sleep for long time.

 

Tuesday 19th August 1919  

Out 7.30am. breakfast. Sat in chair, read and dozed. Two reports after dinner sat in sun of rail. Half asleep, read ‘Repatriation’ Jack got tea and this up.

 

Wednesday 20th August 1919  

Another cool fresh day. After dinner stood at rail and waited for boxing, watching albatrosses. Boxing a frost. Read, afternoon tea. 7-8pm Len Richardson typed for me. Wrote Ede x 1\v

 

Thursday 21st August 1919  

Bath. On deck. Stood and read no reports. Dinner and read magazines. Afternoon tea and saw Len. After tea in Mr Fairlie’s cabin. Haircut 4pm. Read more magazines. This and letter for home.

 

Friday 22nd August 1919  

Bill late turning out. Still cool, sat in chair, read ‘Martin Chizzlewit’ and waited customers, but none came. And doze in afternoon and got some tea as Jack sick and (Sen?c) cold. After tea walk and yarn to Mr Y.M. and finished off postcards home and to Ede. Read magazine. Slept and knocked shin getting into bed.

 

Saturday 23rd August 1919  

Breakfast 7.30am as off Port Adelaide. Medical Inspection, took temperatures. Watching coming to wharf by midday and Sergeants Tapp and Bott left. We couldn’t get off. Very cool breeze. Got note from G and wire from Em. Left about 2pm, played Eucha and lost. Afternoon tea – watched coast go bye and read. 11 yarning MacKinnon and this.

Bath and breakfast, cold breeze and calm. Got one report. Fine apples and oranges. Reading

 

Monday 25th August 1919  

Melbourne – Off Quarantine. Port Melbourne, breakfast early, wind very keen. Lady M.O. took temps. To wharf Port Melbourne, dinner. Victs. off and then leave, dressed and to Melbourne, saw Len Read, walk round, wired, afternoon tea at McKinney(?) and Schauber(?). Out to dinner. Len at Camberwell and very nice to me. 8.45pm train and 9.45pm to Port.

 

Tuesday 26th August 1919  

Cold salt bath and sponge over.

Coming down Port Phillip and this. Rip three M.Schs(?) sailing in. Little pilot steamer tumbling about. Got few reports and like a fool started ‘Red Morn’ by Max Pemberton and finished it tonight. So no reports typed. After long wait got Pay, rough night.

 

Wednesday 27th August 1919  

Had hot salt sponge, rolling about. Very rough and blowing, read all day. 6 o’clock till 8pm in Wood’s cabin and this.
