Territorial Army Notes
Ichobod.
Prior to Thursday last the writer knew rather less than nothing about the work of a field company of Royal Engineers. He says rather less than nothing because he had a hazy sort of notion that he really did know something, and he now finds that that notion bore as much resemblance to the genuine articles as the pungent "perfume" of ripe Limburger cheese bears to the divine odour of ottar of roses - as much and no more.
On Thursday evening he was present by invitation at the inspection by Brigadier-General F.C. Heath, Inspector of Royal Engineers of the Cheshire Field Company, R.E., and saw things which excited his Paul Pryish Nature.
Results: He asked a few pertinent questions, and may be one or two that were impertinent, and right here he says that in the Birkinhead drill-shed there's a heap of rattling good "copy" to be had for the picking-up.

During the course of the work on Thursday General Heath made his way unceasingly from one detachment to another and put questions partaking of the nature of Chinese puzzles to sappers and non-coms alike. Evidently he was satisfied with the answers received for at the close of the inspection he warmly congratulated Major Hutchison on the physique and turn-out of the company, as also on the theoretical and practical knowledge all ranks had displayed.
