An Armagh Admiral
Captain Alexander R. Palmer A.D.C., to the King, who has been promoted to the rank of Rear-Admiral, and placed on the retired list, is a son of the late Surgeon J. Mansergh Palmer D.L., of Armagh.
He became a cadet in July1893 and early in his career he specialised in torpedo duties.
On the opening of the European War, he was in command of the Fifth Submarine Flotilla, Harwich, and in February 1915, he was appointed to the command of the Dover Submarine Flottilla, discharging that duty until he went to the Operations Division at the Admiralty.
He was promoted to the rank of Captain at the end of 1917 and became Flag-Captain to Head-Admiral Ernest Gaunt in the Persion Gulf for a period, he then took command of the torpedo schoolship, Defiance,at Davenport, and later of the aircraft-carrier Argus in China.
Two of his brothers E.M. :Palmer O.B.E., and Irving M Palmer D.S.C., - servied in the Royal Navy, and another brother Major Richard Lodge Palmer D.S.O. M.C. was in the Royal Artillery.
