Talke Jubilee - Church's 50 Years' History - Early Schemes
The 50th anniversary of the opening and consecration of St.Saviour's Church, Talke, took place on Sunday, when a jubilee festival and special thanksgiving services of a successful character were held.
The Ecclesiastical parish of Talke was constituted on Sept. 23rd, 1859, the first incumbent being the Rev. Marks Wilks McHutchin, who had been for about a year assistant curate at Audley and in charge of Talke Chapel. The separation of the parish from Audley, and the appointment of an incumbent gave an impetus to church work in the village, and soon the need of another church was felt.
A scheme was mooted, a fund raised, but this had to be abandoned owing to the impossibility of securing a site not likely to be affected by subsidences from mining operations.
Instead a temporary iron church was erected on a site given by the late Mrs Marsh-Caldwell and opened on April 1st, 1868.
The iron church did good service for about eleven years, when, owing to the increasing population, the need of a larger and up-to-date building was felt. A scheme was set on foot by the Rev. W.A. Wickham, who came to Talke in January 1875, as assistant curate of Talke, with charge of St.Saviour's Church.
Subscriptions amounting to £2,000 were received including £650 from the late Misses Marsh-Caldwell, who also gave the site in 1868.
The foundation stone of the present church (St.Saviours) was laid on July 16th 1878. A wooden and concrete church was erected at a total cost of £4000, towards which over £3.000 had been raised, and the balance of the debt was paid off at the end of 1884. The church was consecrated and opened on September 15th 1879.
The Bishop of Lichfield (Dr Kempthorne), has sent an inspiring and congratulatory message to the parishioners upon the attaining of the jubilee of the Church and the celebrations synchronised with the completion, by the Rev. J.H.L. Edwards M.A., of 23 years as Rector of Talke. The present rector was instituted on September 15th 1906 and nearly of Newcastle-under-Lyme in succession to the Rev. J.W. Dunne.

When she arrives in Hanley tomorrow evening for a public meeting, accompanied by the Earl and Countess of Harrowby and Viscount and Viscountess Sandon, a guard-of-honour, consisting of members of the local branches of the British Legion will be drawn up outside the Town Hall.
