Talke Girl Guides

The progress made by the Girl Guide movement in the Talke district was shown at the annual social gatherings held at the headquarters of the 1st and 2nd companies at Linley Wood, Talke, on the invitation of Major-Genearl and Mrs Heath-Caldwell. The members of the two companies and the Brownie pack, numbering about 60, were entertained to tea, followed by a social.

Last evening another enjoyable gathering was held, when about fifty adult guests - mothers of the local girl guides were entertained at tea held in the Guides headquarters. The organisation of the events was supervised by the captain, Miss Joyce Holden.

Among those present were Major-General F.C. Heath-Caldwell C.B., and Mrs Heath-Caldwell (Commissioner for the Tunstall and Talke district) and Mrs D. Martin and they took an active part in the arrangements, assisted by members of the house staff.

After tea displays of dancing were given by Miss Nora Boulton, Miss Lilian Scragg and Miss Dorothy Vickers, Miss C.M. Boulton A.R.M.C.M., played the pianoforte accompaniments. British Legion - County Conference at Kidsgrove

North Staffordshire County Committee of the British Legion held a conference at the Headquarters of the Kidsgrove Branch on Saturday. Mr J.E.Wright (County Chairman) presided, supported by Admiral Lord Stafford K.C.B., Major-General Heath-Caldwell C.B., Mr B.C. Jones-Darlington, Mr W.H.Amison (County Executive), Mr C.F.Barker (County Secretary) and Mr John Cooney (Chairman of Kidsgrove Branch).
The Chairman made sympathetic reference to the death of King Albert of the Belgians who was a member of the British Legion and the conference stood in silence as a tribute to his memory. The following telegram was dispatched to the Minister of the Interior, Brussels: "The North Staffordshire County Conference of the British Legion now sitting records deepest sympathy with the Belgian nation in the passing of a beloved Monach and an ex-Service leader of admirable qualities. Chairman."
General Heath-Caldwell, on behalf of the Kidsgrove Brance, welcomed the delegates stating that it was two years since he performed a similary duty. The British Legion's work, he said, would be required for a long time yet. He was glad to know the Legion was increasing in numbers, but it was up to all to get others to join.

Lord Stafford said it gave him great pleasure to note the interest of all. It was now over fifteen years since they fought in the War, but interest in the Legion did not wane, and the organisation of the Legion continued to improve. The annual report showed that public subscriptions continued to increase. There was no flag day in Britain that appealed more than that of the Legion which showed that the public still remembered those who fought for them. He hoped the Legion would long continue to expand.

Accident and Robbery - Van with £2,000 Worth of Goods Crashes Into Telegraph Pole - Three Persons Injured.

A remarkable affair occurred on Friday on the Watling Street, near the Red Gate Inn. A motor-van travelling from Liverpool to London crashed into a telegraph pole, and while the injured people concerned were being taken to hospital the van was robbed.

The accident happened about 10.30pm . The van was being driven by Harry Westwood, of Manor Street, Clapham, and when some 200 or 300 yards on the Lindley side of the Red Gate it crashed into a telegraph pole which was broken in two. The van went into a ditch and turned on it's side. The driver and his two passengers, Mr R. Newell of Beckenham, Kent, and Miss Margarite Watson of Bushey, Herffordshire, were thrown all in a heap. Miss Watson managed to scramble out and to help her two companions to do so.

A car belonging to Major-General F.C. Heath-Caldwell, Talke, Staffs, and driven by the latter's chauffeur, S. Roden, which happened to pass just after the accident, pulled up and conveyed the three injured persons to Nuneaton General Hospital. There is was found that Westwood has sustained a cut to the forehead necessitating two or three stitches and the two other passengers were suffering from abrations and shock. After treatment the injured persons were taken to the Newdegate Arms Hotel.
Van Stripped.

Meanwhile, the van had been left in the ditch and whilst it was unattended some person or persons stripped it of its headlights, sidelights, tools, lifting jack, and other articles. A spare wheel was chained to the van and this had evidently resisted the efforts of the thieves.

Fifth North Stafford's Annual Ball - Military Ceremonial at Stoke Function.

The annual ball of the 5th Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, was held at the King's Hall, Stoke, and, as usual, proved to be one of the most brilliant social events of the season in Stoke-on-Trent.

A regimental ball is one of the few events of its kind which can be made really spectacular, and this annual function is always notable in this respect. Not only were there brilliant colours of the uniforms of the men and the beautiful gowns of the ladies, but there was an elaborate scheme of decorations.
In addition there were touches of military ceremonial which gave special interesst to the proceedings. The drums and colours, uncased, were placed on the floor, just in front of the platform, and throughout the evenin a guard, in full ceremonial dress, was kept by members of the Battalion.

Behind and enclosing the platform, where Newman and his band, from London, playing for dancing, was a great silver background bearing the badge of the Battalion, and the front of the platform was covered with bands of red, black and white, the Battalion colours.
