Forces Require More Man - Voluntary System in Danger says Sir Herbert Bryan - Praise for "Contemptibles."
"We may not have those great trained forces that the dictators of Europe have today, but there was a great armed force in 1914 and from the "contemptible little army" which went over to France was built up a huge force of men who had not been conscripted in the beginning but who voluntarily fought for their country. Those are the men who are seated round this room, and those are the men with whom our friends over the sea, whether they be German, Italian, Russian, or Japanese, will have to contend if they are reckless enough to commence again." So said Mr C.R. Algar, a London Barrister, acknowledging the toast of the "Visitors" at the annual dinner in connection with the Deverills' branch of the British Legion, held at the New Inn, Monkton Deverill, on Saturday night.
