Up in Londonderry in Northern Ireland when I was a sub-lieutenant or Anti-Submarine Control Officer in a frigate we had, I don’t quite know how, won the fleet fighting efficiency prize and as a result of that, one day we were out at sea giving a demonstration of how  squid worked, these were 22inch mortars, six barrels situated just in front of the bridge on the deck of the frigate and when they fired off, they went about 300 metres ahead of the ship and then they sank down and they were set to explode at whatever depth the ASCO (Anti-Submarine Control Officer) control set on it, and that was my job as Anti Submarine Control  Office I was in charge of the ASDIC team in a small little compartment on the bridge where we picked echoes of things and tracked them and  fired off our projectiles at them.

Normally in war time in war time this would be against an enemy submarine or an object we thought was a submarine so one day having been sort of having been picked out as an efficient ship we were entertaining about twelve to fifteen four-ring captains on our bridge.

This was five years into the peace after the end of the Second World War and there were a lot of staff who were being held on to at the Admiralty because the Admiralty did not quite know whether they would get into another war, possibly with Russia, so a lot of senior officers were twiddling their thumbs, finding courses and things to keep them occupied, and this particular lot of four-ring captains was presumably from London or from the Staff College.

All the live ammunition was loaded into our mortars for this particular exercise and we were all quite excited by this and seeing what was going to happen and actually see them exploding and making a noise, a bang, only not just one bang like that depth charge but six of them and they had a ripple exploding effect to apparently do the maximum damage to an underwater submarine.

So we decided to just pick some sort of echo up on our ASDIC and we went through the normal drill and when it came to the part “Home the fuses,” this was a part of the drill, when I had to press a button on the side of the cabinet that we had all our ASDIC apparatus, all our elementary computers and things, I had to press a thing to home the fuses, and what happened was in the excitement, and I think just normal training may have overtaken me because I may have not have pressed the switch to home the fuses and exactly the same thing happened with our six projectiles, that happened on that destroyer on the trip to Bangor (1945), absolutely nothing happened and I thought goodness gracious me someone is going to get into trouble for this so kept quiet about not pressing the button to home the fuses.

So I kept my mouth firmly closed and it was a few years after the war and everybody was in a sort of a bit of a tizzy about the Russians and that sort of thing there, nevertheless people enjoyed life and they were not really quite so efficient as all that and I am quite sure that these days if a frigate fired off its squid and they did not explode there would be a real investigation to find out what had caused that. There was no enquiry and the gunnery officer checked over the numbers of the bits of ammunition he had used and that was dealt with and nobody said any more. 

Another thing that happened was that again we were firing off our projectiles and on this particular occasion we used dummy projectiles that were 22”hollow, they had no explosive in and they were designed to be fired out of our mortars in exactly the same size as the squid mortars, only they floated once they hit the sea and could be recovered by our sea boat and could be used again.

It was just an economy drive, you don’t want to use live ammunition every time you do an exercise, and in this particular occasion I picked up a fairly strong echo ahead, or at least my crew did, and we decided we would target it and everything went according to plan. There was this large echo and we twiddled our knobs and followed the echo in towards us, and set the dummy projectiles to target this particular echo.

So everything went according to plan, I must have pressed the fuse button because the projectiles left the ship and they didn’t have to explode but everything else went right and the sea boat was launched and when they got to the six projectiles to take them out of the sea and bring them back to the ship, in the middle of the pattern they found a large fishing net with floats on and one large salmon in it and a dog fish, a shark. So it was not such an unsuccessful exercise that time at all. I don’t quite know what happened to the net, I expect it was used for fishing after that. And that was another thing that happened in Londonderry when I was there as a Sub-Lieutenant.

Minor crisis at the Lodge, which resolved itself without interference from me. After lunch walked to Batcombe Down 2.45 – 6.30 – about 4 miles there and 4 miles back. Looked down on Batcombe Church but could not distinguish the Priory.

A quiet day yesterday – Weather warm but overcast.

Trouble in Korea; aggression from the North compared to Hitler’s advance into the Rhineland – Prompt intervention by America and United Nations. Apparently Russia is not taking up the challenge.

Village Parson:-

Despite what your correspondents say, we should not be too hard on the square pegs in round holes. The causes of a clergyman’s unpopularity are not infrequently to his credit. A parish may become stagnant in the closing years of an ageing incumbent, who is loved for old associations sake. Then in his place comes an evangelic man with new (attitudes?) and new ideas, and it may be years before these are accepted. In the meantime he is heartily disliked because “he is always at us over something.” In the passing of time, he is accepted and gradually becomes popular, unless he has grown disenchanted.

A frequent cause of friction is a domineering and disagreeable clique. A recent novel by R.C. Sherriff gives a telling and realistic picture of what happens. Often a clergyman must choose the hard way and fight such a clique if he is to be a true servant of the Church. And his opponents will fight bitterly, vindictively and meanly, doing their best (or worst) to break him in heart and spirit.

It is easy to form an estimate on casual gossip. But the fault is just as likely to be in the hole as in the peg.

Bartrop(?) appeared after breakfast. Took GM (Constance Heath-Caldwell) to Maiden Newton. MP(NR?) – Stewack handed out a helpful little sermon. Blind leading the Blind – Teaching reading – What spoils it, prejudice, pride, and criticism (fault finding).

After lunch Burton Bradstock for bathe and tea. Jimmy on his motorbike, the remainder in CAA. Saw J. Howard and T. Bow off by 6.08 train from Dorchester (for Portsmouth). Jimmy left about 10pm on his motorbike.

Letter – Raining morning. CAA to Charminster to collect skittles for fete. Shopping in Dorchester, tea, coffee, fish, tobacco and some sketching materials. After tea walked round valley. Fete meeting Chilfrome 8pm.

X Fine but overcast. Answered some letters.

Tied up wisteria. Mr Donald to tea. After tea walked to Stagg folly.

Took chairs and trestles to Chilfrome for fete.

Thursday 6^th July 1950

Fete – a showery day. Not more than 60 or 70 people there. I helped Westmacott and Faulkes with womens skittles from about 2.30 to 9pm.

Lunch at Lodge – Telephoned Adams, plumber, re changing bath at the Lodge. After lunch Violet and I took tea to Burton Bradstock and came back along the coast road via Abbotsbury. Sent off this months poultry.

Monday 10^th July 1950

Left Cattistock at 2pm in FRF 295, arrived Bedford about 7.30 – Dinner at Swan, unable to get a bed there, slept at Abbey Hotel, not too comfortable. Next morning left about 10.15 with Aunt Sophie and Miss Tow. Lunch at the Cheque, Newbery and arrived Cattistock about 4.30, bad neuralgia, went to bed for 36 hours.

After supper walked to badgers, saw four cubs playing about 10.30pm, watched them for some time.

Two Churches will Benefit - £100 Raised at Chilfrome Fete

By the kindness of Mrs Kennard, a highly successful fete was held at Chilfrome House on Thursday, the proceeds to be divided between the Chilfrome and Cattistock Churches (Rector Rev.A.V. Deane). Although heavy storms marred the early afternoon, the evening was bright and good business was done, resulting in a profit of £100. Skittling for a pig was the major attraction for the men, and was conducted by Mr Lippett, who "kept the balls rolling" on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evenings near the Fox and Hounds, Cattistock. The Rector made 15 points but was out-matched by Mr Pearce 16, and Mr Paulley 17, who won the pig. Mr Lippett was helped by Messrs Langford senr., J.  Westmacott, Collins and Rogers. The entrances fees at Childfrome House were collected by Messrs Fooks, Langford, Wills, Paull and J. Westmacott. Stall-holders converted one lawn into a veritable market of old time. Fine hot sunny day. Glass rising. To Dorchester early, 10.30. Long removed a tooth. Met Wharton. Home to lunch. Did some hoeing. Bought a pair of good stout shoes. After supper walked to Lodge, saw Aunt Sophie (who had 8 brothers and 4 sisters) Simply full of beans and crazy but very deaf.

Village thrilled with skittles. The alley is laid out on the waste ground opposite Saville Hall, and play is on every night up to 11pm. Prize 10/- a night, and the winners play off final at 11 for the pig. The whole is in aid of Cattistock Football Club.

Violet went off with trailer to try to get Bassett to fix up a bed for the precious Rosamond and John. (and brought back trolly) Mrs Donald came in rather pissed about how to get herself, Bria, the puppy and her luggage to Dublin by Wednesday. Fixed up looking glass for spare room. Solignum on Fence, and erected the second panel. After tea walked up to Hemming’s. Warm, rather close day, sunny at times but mostly overcast. Mrs Donald came in this morning. Telephoned to bank for her. Letter from Pat to Violet.

A fine day though rather oppressive. Lunch at the Lodge. 3pm to GM (Constance HC), Aunt Sophie and Violet in FRF295 through Maiden Newton, Winterbourne Abbas, Portesham, Abbotsbury and along the coast round to Burton Bradstock and back via Askerswell and Toller. After tea walked round the head of the valley, along cornfield, cellic field, (dam) Stagg folly, Kennells and home.

Pouring with rain and blowing. Jimmy arrived at Dorchester 8pm. Went for a walk, Maiden Newton, up the Yeovil Road, back by Charity (steans?) and bought a few mushrooms.

Yellow Gage plums ripe but only half a dozen and (Ealing?) spoiled by the ants.

Sunday 23^rd July 1950

MP Chilfrome. Took 12 o’clock celebrations, about 13 communicants. Sunny, windy day (SW) good cloud effects.

Minor domestic crisis at Lodge, no doubt a reflection of Korea and international unrest.

The question is- Is Korea a deliberate beginning of WW3 by Russia, or did they think they would get away with it and that United Nations would do nothing but talk.

Took Jimmy to Dorchester to catch 6.08 train for Portsmouth, back by Bridport Road.

Monday 24^th July 1950

Find, sunny day. Finished Solignaning the fence. After tea walked up Staggs folly and back via Charity (bottom?) to look for mushrooms, found none. More friction at Lodge between D and Q’s. Letter from (Cameron?) to deal with Portsmouth explosives due to sabotage.

Tuesday 25^th July 1950

Rain. Early to Dorchester to consult Lock, re L’Affaire Cameron. Its advised called the bluff and refusing to pay the 9.19.10 demanded. Forecast fair weather expected. Dewdney digging new strawberry bed. Walked round Staggs folly. John and Ros arrived after tea. A depressing day. Everyone thinking about another war.

Wednesday 26^th July 1950

Fine sunny day. Shelled a few peas for seed and dozed in the garden after lunch. Examined three beehives and got 4 small (bars?) of honey.

After tea fed hens as usual, watered the (lanelds?) and then went for a long walk 7 – 10, up to Staggs folly, along the Yeovil road as far as the quarry on Warden(?)(his question mark) Hill and back across country. Diana left for Up Marden to Rodolph and Madeline de Salis for Goodwood. Ros and John have brought back the tent but left the pegs behind.

Thursday 27^th July 1950

Letter from C.E. Heath & Co enclosing cheque for £835.12 endowment Assurance Policy. Returned cheque to Heath & Co reminding them that they had advised me to leave the money on deposit with the National Mutual Life Assurance Co.

Cheque for £306 from Dorset C.C. grand for DAMC. Forwarded to Midland Bank, Dorchester for payment into DAMC account.

After lunch drove G.M. (Constance HC) and Aunt Sophie and Miss Tow to Burton Bradstock via Toller and Askerwell. Violet, John and Ros in Atwood car where we had tea on the beach. Violet and John bathed but to my mind not hot enough, back via Compton Valence. Fine day.

Monday 21^st August 1950

A lovely day. Spent most of it dealing with the bees and got my study full of them. Two of the hives have a lot of brood in the two supers so that I had to leave two supers on end. Also I found two (emfly?) and one full queen cell in No.2.

I suppose it is the changeable weather that has upset them.

Jimmy (J.A. Heath-Caldwell) cleaned out the garage and began painting in Diana’s bedroom. Had (customs, another?) 90 at painting the hedgerow club.

Skittles Matches

In connection with the Horticultural Show skittling opened on the Friday evening when R. Hatcher won the prize after playing off a tie of 16 with I. Turner. On the Saturday another prize was tied for by F. Hallett and C.Greening with 15 each. this was played off on Monday evening when Hallett was the victor. Monday evenng's play gave the game to G. Bird after tying with J. Ardagh with 14 each. On Tuesday the game gave three 15's to J.Heath-Caldwell, W. Paulley and C. Pearce. The scores on Monday and Tuesday will count for the pig.

Rain all day – bicycled to Dorchester to fetch CAA (decarbonisation and brake adjustment) After tea went to look for mushrooms. Found plenty of horse mushrooms, but few of its edible variety. Fixed bookshelf in wc.

Rainy nearly all day – Most of Jimmy’s group came to tea en route for Plymouth – arriving 3.30 – departed 5.30. (Lt) John Bowers, (Lt Stephen) Pakenham, (Lt) Julian Howard, and 3 others.  Lit fire in sitting room – feeling heady.

Monday 4^th September 1950

Fine but overcast am. Rain in the night. Shelled broad beans for seed. Hung up tobacco. 10lbs for sugar for bee syrup – pm finished picture of cows in Meechs meadow. Was an object of curiosity to a family of geese who investigated everything very loudly – pecked at my gumboots and finally settled down to sleep at my feet. Violet and Shilly to Dorchester in CAA.

Wednesday 6^th September 1950

Fed No.3,4, 5 hives 16lbs sugar between them. On downs before lunch trying to get studies of sheep.  Then into Meech’s field and the cows. Strawberry plants arrived from Brixton – planted them. Filled CAA 4 gallons petrol, ordered new tyre. Mr Crook of Joy, Lane telephoned re DAMC accounts.

Dorchester am. Paid Joy Lane 1 guinea for overhauling DAMC books – pm Violet and Shilly visited Dorchester Agricultural show. Commenced sketch from East side of valley looking over Castle hill.

Saturday 11.am – on to Milford, visited Attwooods at Burchells near Milford. Quite a good lunch at Cranleigh (12/-) then on to Rusper for wedding of John Wood. Reception at Lyre, at least 300 guests. Met Aunt Ada (aged 90) Aunt Beire(?), Michael Stottard, Edwin Wood, Janet Wood, Evelyn Broadwood, Leo Broadwood, his son Stewart, Majory Hull and her youngest daughter. Tea. Rodolph and Madeleine de Salis, Posy Heath, Griggs and his wife, Joan Long (Sarl?), David Holland, his wife, Freddy, Dorothy and Pamela Heath.

Cold weather continues. Sunday HR 8 Cattistock. M.P. Maiden Newton. Don’t remember the (sermons?) Monday, Christmas Day, M.P. Cattistock and an excellent short address from Deane on the difference between joy and happiness. (happiness is passing in for children of all ages, joy endures) Took midday celebrations. A quiet week, dining at Cattistock Lodge and wonderful effort by Dany and Tab(?) xmas the loads of presents. Have three books to read. Jerusalem from Ros, ‘The Age of Eloquence’ and Boswell’s ‘London Journal.’ Violet had x ray last week and a few days later was informed that the bone in the ankle had been broken but had mended.

About 50 christmas cards. Wrote to ….(?) Mabel and Shilly, Ros and John James(?) (Tawes?) Reading Badinfs ‘Freedom du Spirit’
