Letter - 16th January 1966

From - Miss M.R.Dornauf, 15 Church St, Northcote, Auckland, NZ

To - Miss Pat Heath-Caldwell, The Pound House, Cattistock, Dorset, England.

Dear Pat,

First, thank you so much for the lovely time I had at your home. My thanks and regards also to your Mother and Father. Thank you also for the lovely bon voyage card you sent me. I think it is lovely.
Now I suppose you would like to know how the trip went. Well, it was wonderful and I enjoyed every minute of it. If you ever think of coming to NZ again you should come that way as I am sure you would enjoy it.

After many changes of plan en route we finally ended up flying from Kabul to Delhi and continuing the trip in hired buses to Madras where we eventually arrived on the appointed day after 80 wonderful days en route.

We had 3 buses, 105 passengers, 5 drivers and a camp service coach to carry all the food and camping equipment. Among the most useful things I took in the food line were the soups which we had every night and honey and jam for breakfast and lunches. Apart, of course from the tinned meat.

The party ranged from 18 to 74 years and majority in the 24-36 age group with some "young" 40-50ish and most of them were truly delightful people. Proof of this is the fact that at the end of the trip we could say that nobody was not speaking to anyone else which after the sort of life we had been leading for three months was most remarkable.

If you want to know where we went and what we did the best answer is everywhere and everything. We slept everywhere from in a tent in heavy frost in Turkey and on a hotel lawn in the rain in Quetta in Pakistan, all together in the customs hall on the Iran border and in first class hotel bedrooms andon mattresses on the floor in rest houses in India.

We washed in post hotel bathrooms, at village pumps andin a stream in Iran. We cooked on our camp stoves in the early hours of the morning, after dark and in dust storms. And Pat, I can assure you that through it all we had a most wonderful time.

Went to a special church service put on for us in Jerusalem, a five year old girl's birthday party in Kabul, and a picture show in a private home in Bombay, all the result of casual meetings. And there were other invitations aswell, only not enough space to tell you all about them.

We did all sorts of things, a boat trip on the Bosphorus, a climb up in a mineret in Isfahan, a night club in Tehran. The things which became common place. being stared at unwinkingly by the local population every time we stopped (now know how animals in the Zoo feel), our morning shopping expedition to by bread etc for the next 24 hours, wandering up the street with a few yards of bread draped over your arm, guarding your belongings while cooking to prevent them from wandering off to the local village in the hands of the numerous small children always under your feet (a lot of stuff did anyway).

We had several artists and sketchers in the party and they had a wonderful time everywhere we went sketching scenes and people.

Paddy Garrow-Fisher advertises this trip as "the journey of a lifetime," and I think it is a very apt description. I feel that I should like to do it again some day but doubt if I ever will as 3 months is a long time even if I was to fly one way. Then again it probably would not be quite the same again but it was easily the best trip I have even done. The more I think about it the more amazing and wonderful it all seems.

One of the things about the Indiaman is that one soon accepts the impossible as inevitable and to be expected while miracles take just a littlle longer. The only thing you must not do is expect anything to go according to plan because then you will be doomed to disappointment before you start but if you just go determined to enjoy everything and accept everything as it comes you will have a most marvellous time.
Have a wonderful surprise after I got home. Dad gave me a new car for Xmas. A Hillman Super Minx. I am absolutely thrilled as I did not expect a car again for years. Also, I lost some weight on the trip home and while my clothes don't fit it is so nice I can't complain about that.

Well, Pat, must press on with my good work. Please excuse the typewritter and also the mistakes but I am trying to get as much in as little space as possible and as quickly as possible.

Regards,Marie Dornauf.

Letter - 18th April, 1966

From - J.A.Heath-Caldwell, at I.H.McCarroll's Farm, NZ

To - Capt. the Rev. & Mrs Heath-Caldwell, The Pound House, Cattistock, Dorset, England

Dear Pa, Ma and Pat,

Thank you for your letters lately. Am writing from a sheep farmer's house. He has a small herd of about 20 cows which I test. The have an Australian staying with them at the moment - he's got a farm near Brisbane - at a place called Wowan - S.S.W. of Rockhampton. A lot of land is being opened up there as far as I could gather.

Mr, and Mrs Garrett, where I also test have gone off for a three weeks tour of Australia so I expect they'll be somewhere there by now.

I went and saw Dr James Short, my specialist, the other day and we talked about things.HE said he'd write to you.

Thank you very much for the birth certificate. I'm just now completing my passport application form plus the usual photographs. If I'm to travel in the future I thought it would be a good idea to get my passport renewed.

Yesterday, I had a bathe at The Mount - the water was nottoo cold - it was most refreshing. I was on my way back from a farm just opposite Beal's - Pat will remember where I mean. I went along the Ocean Beach road on the way back up to Oropi(?) here and stopped off on the way.

Here it is autumn and the evenings are now drawing in - but it is also very pleasant. Although I must admit I don't like wet weather because of the conditions of the canvas on the tractor which has new deteriorated somewhat badly.

I told you I was trying to get into the Army. I've succeeded. Next week I'll be commencing basic training at Papakura camp and then at Waiouru which is at the South End of the Desert Road.

This will be a great change and will really give me something different to write to you about.

Hope you are all well.

Jimmy.

Letter - 2nd July 1966

From - 42388 Gunner J.A.Heath-Caldwell, Papakura Military Camp, Papakura

To - Capt. C.H.Heath-Caldwell, The Pound House, Cattistock, Dorset, England

Dear Ma and Pa,

The winter continues here, wet and cold. The weekend before last I went down to Taranaki to see the family and found them well. Dora was recovering from an operation - she was cut, her throat, from ear to ear. The children were well - Hilary with her horse, and the boys were using a house they had built out in the field.

I had a look round the farm too, as that was convenient because I was staying next door at Rex Morgan's place. I met Jack Cookson too, who was bulldozing next door at Jack Latham's place. I also met Don (Klenner?), who lives down the road, he helped built the piggery.

Martin Langdon now farms a farm about 6 miles away from Tokanui hospital - and I gather that Digger Mackay's brother (he share milks for old Mr Walker behind the farm at Tuna) farms a farm adjoining Tokonui.

The week before last I spent 3 days in bed with some gastro enteritis germ. They gave me some pills etc after taking blood and urine samples. That has delayed my yellow fever and typhus injections.

Our hut is not very warm because we have no central heating, no stove and when it rains hard there are one or two leaks. So I'm wondering how to keep warm. An electric blanket is out because we are not allowed electrical gear because the wiring of the hut will not take, so they think, a heavy load. So I think I'll invest in a pair of light wool blankets - aircell ones. I now wear an air-cell vest which is very warm.
The bus from here to Auckland costs 2/6 for a one way journey which is quite good. So shopping is not a problem - provided one takes one's time. I don't really want to spend money on doing that but - that is on getting more gear - but I think it really would be worth it.

I'm now debating whether to get a pedal bicycle, a motorcycle, or a small car or a cheap old car. Jack Cookson said that if Pat is going to come out here again she ought to, not ought but must, bring a Landrover. To do this she would have to have owned it for 12 months in England - so she would have to plan a little in advance, I'd imagine.

I wrote you a letter saying what I felt. No doubt you'd take exception to it but so do most people when others critisize.

What I meant to say briefly was that I think Ma and Pa could spend a little money, time and thought, of better still, thought, time and money in that order on themselves, ie perhaps a course of pills to take wrinkles out or something like that. I understand from some of the bidge I read in the papers that contraceptive pills have all sorts of effects besides the main effect of inhibiting the production of egg cells in the overy.

I'm the oldest of the recruits here. I find that I am by no means the least fit. Buy I'm a long long way from being very fit.

I'm very glad to hear Pa has taken a fancy to music. If either Pa or Ma could tell me more about their parents or relatives I should be grateful.

I am now reading "The Spirit of Chinese Philosophy" by Fung Yu-han. If you'd like to give me something I'd appreciate for Xmas what about a set of Linguaphone records for Russian or if you could get it for Japanese. What can I get you Xmas? And Pa's birthday?
Love Jimmy.

P.S. Dora has now got an off-white, red upholstered mini and she is delighted.

Letter - 19th August 1966

From - J.A.Heath-Caldwell, NZ

To - Capt & Mrs Heath-Caldwll, The Pound House, Cattistock, Dorset, England.

Dear Pater and Mater,

Thats a different address for a change - better, do you think, than Pop and Mop.

Well, I've advanced a little since last week. I'm now in Villa VI or 6. We have a lot of fun having group debates - called here group therapy. I've promoted myself to the "Pigs" table in the dining hall. I claimed that as I had been to a Prep school to prepare boys for Winchester Public School then I should know a thing or two about the motto "Manners Maketh the Man." They took me at my word.

Talking about Dunchurch Winton Hall, I wrote to Mr Fawcus some time ago asking for a school magazine. That usually gives news of past students histories and is very interesting, you might write to him for me.

I see the American Administration is getting het up about the general unprescribed use of transquillisers in the States. It seems it is quite O.K. if one's doctor really knows what he is doing - otherwise things may go wrong.

Please could you stop blaming my marriage to Dora for my mental gyrations. I sometimes think you and Ma make a mistake too but of course, you never did - or did you? Anyway, a son shouldn't criticise the marriage, particularly the marriage of his parents - after all you produced me whether by design or error I suppose I'll never know. However, I think you did it by design.

A patient in the ward said I was born on a Friday 28th - its a long time ago and I can't remember that way back.

Anyway, thank you for what you did and be cheerful - I'm well on the way to being mended, only I don't lke being sent out of the army on medical grounds - just for skylarking and writing a letter to the Herald.
Hope you are all well.

Your loving son, Jimmy

Letter - 30th October, 1966

From - J.A.Heath-Caldwell, Tokonui Hospital. NZ

To - Capt & Mrs Heath-Caldwell, The Pound House, Cattistock, Dorset, England.

Dear P, Ma and Pat,

Thank you for the sketch book and paints. Which things I shall try to use shortly.

Am now in the process of getting out of here - as I've said before, into a job which is not a banjo one (banjo - slang for shovel). Actually, as I've already said, banjo jobs are pretty precarious because most of the jobs which used to be plain banjo ones have gone in favour of powered machines. One only has to look at the hospital now to see exactly what bulldozers, earth movers can do to realise that shovels are a bit dated. They are now piping nearly all the small ditches at the hospital end of this block of land. It makes me think that some ideas I had about how I could improve the farm at Tuna weren't really very far fetched at all - they were perhaps 20-30 years ahead of time.

The first job I've enquired about was for a technician's job at Ruakura - this I couldn't have because somebody else had 2 years of agricultural academic study behind him instead of one years like mine and he also had practical experience too. Another job is a librarian's job at Waikato University and the other one I've looked at was for a laboratory technicians job at the Waikato Hospital which seemed quite straight forward - of course I may find I require a year or two's academic study in order to fit the bill for either of those jobs - but you never know until you've tried.

It's always seemed to me that common sense plus some general knowledge goes quite a long way and I've heard of others who have managed to get jobs without any formal qualifications at all.

As for your letter saying be sensible, behave yourself etc. Perhaps I didn't at Papakura. It was so like a return to midshipman's days that perhaps I acted like one, and our lot was particularly wild at the end of the last big war. I think the services could have got a lot tamer since then. Anyway, I've learned my lesson. However, I'm glad I'm out of it because I don't agree with Vietnam and what is at the moment being done there. I may be wrong but I think the possession of nuclear weapons has sobered up a lot of political maniacs and I don't think many or any could get away with what Hitler managed to get away with.

The Chinese are dead scared with modeern technologyh - if introduced there is a haphazard way their employment problems would, I'm sure, be insoluable. They feel that the Americans could - with their leading technology, upset the apple cart.

I probably read the papers too much and listen to television news but I fail to see why it should have too bad an effect on me. I don't think I could be like the majority here, who don't read the newspapers and probably don't follow the news but who manage to be "ill" just the same.

I still think that this era is probably the most interesting there has ever been and I wonder what will happen next. I really don't think that is an unhealthy way of living life.

Love James.

Letter - 30th October 1966

From - Mrs Enid Cookson, No. 24 R.D., Salisbury Road, Stratford, NZ

To - Miss P.C.M.Heath-Caldwell, The Pound House, Cattistock, Dorset, England

Dear Pat,

Just a little Maori boy friend for you to remind you of N.Z.

Hope you have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year.

I wrote a few lines to your mother and father last night and I said to myself "Now remember what you said to them then you won't have to tell Pat the same news," but already I'm not to sure on what I told them. I had better stock to people you had met.

Mrs Hurliman is much the same, some days hard to understand, other days she is her usual self. Jand and Merve Dunick are still on her farm, she had to put several hundred in to help them along, they had got into such a mess, but this season their cows are doing much better so perhaps they have learnt their lesson and won't spend so freely. Joan has certainly changed the scenery around the house, flowers and shrubs everywhere, the house has been painted, you wouldn't recognise the place, as for Mrs Hurliman's new home, she thinks its a palace and she keeps it like one.

I think I told you Lil Irvings father died, well for months Lil enjoyed her freedom, now she has got a job, she only took it because she needed the money, but now she has got used to working in a shop she quite likes it. I miss her because when ever i was in town I's always  go around and have a cuppa with her.

Stratford is much the same. Some shops are getting a face lift. Another big one has closed down. And at New Plymouth the new air port has opened, so next time you'll be able to take off from there all weathers, and not have that mad rush down to Wanganui, what a day that was. I have heard a rumour that the tourist shop where you done your booking is closing down owing to ill health, I can almost here you say "Bad management." (Excuses spelling Pat)

Well, we are getting a lovely steady rain that we are badly needing and on looking out the kitchen window every thing looks so lovely and green, the birds are all singing Anne Laurie and I'm keeping my fingers crossed, I don't want wind to get up. We've had very little wind this winter and spring and the shrubs look so lovely, the wisteria over the garden path arch is just hanging in flowers, and I'd hate the wind to spoil it all.

Jack has got the timber etc ready to rebuild the old shed where I used to hang the clothes when it rained, he did talk on starting it today, but the rain stopped him. He has just told me he's not working on Sundays any more. I'll believe it when he's had 6 Sundays off. This is the first one for weeks.

We had Ian Wilkes up for Labour weekend (22nd Oct). He is much the same but much better mentally. He has taken interest with another chap in some racing car, that has taken his mind of girls.
Well Pat, this is all for now. I may get an airmail letter away to you between now and Xmas if we have any news of Jimmy.

Behave yourself and give Lilly our kind regards, all the best,

From Enid and Jack. xxx
