Statement of the Services and principal Events in the life of the late George Marsh Esq.
A Commissioner of His Majesty’s Navy.
In June 1746 Commissioner Compton being removed from the Navy Board to be resident Commissioner at Deptford and being aware of the value that Mr.Marsh’s experience in that department would give to his services, solicited Admiral Haddock to permit Mr.Marsh to accompany him as his Clerk, in which situation he continued until Christmas 1746 when Commissioner Compton having resigned his office in consequence of some misunderstanding with the Duke of Bedford who was then first Lord of the Admiralty, he recommended Mr.Marsh to the Navy Board in a letter highly honorable to his zeal and abilities, for the situation of Naval Officer at Antigua which was then vacant, but Admiral Haddock being dead and Commissioner Compton’s influence having (probably?) been impaired by his resignation, his recommendation was not successful, and Mr.Marsh remained until the end of the year 1748 Clerk to the Commissioner at Deptford,to which office Commissioner Davies was appointed on the resignation of Mr.Compton.
After the Peace of Aix le Chappelle the continuance of a resident Commissioner at Deptford was considered unnecessary and Mr.Davies name was left out of the new Patent for the Navy Board.
On his retirement he strongly urged Mr.Marsh’s claims to be (re-entered?) on the establishment of the Navy Office, which he had quitted merely on compliance with the request of his superiors the late Comptroller, Admiral Haddock and Commissioner Compton, however it was not until the year 1750 that Mr.Marsh was re-appointed by Admiral Morton, then Comptroller to the situation he had quitted in the Commissioners office in 1746.
