An Armagh Battery Commander
Major Richard Lodge Palmer M.C., Royal Artillery, son of Surgeon J. Mansergh Palmer D.L., Infirmary House,Armagh:-
During the attack this officer was in close touch with the brigade commander throughout the operations and manoeuvred his battery with the greatest skill.
The assistance rendered by his battery to the movements of the brigade were invaluable. Two enemy counter-attacks were stopped, largely a result of his handling. His quickness in action and clear appreciation of further movement were excellent.
Major Palmer went to France with the original Expeditionary Force, and was mentioned in Field-Marshal Viscount French's first despatch.
He was awarded the Military Cross in the New Year Honours of 1916, and at the same time was mentioned in despatches again by Lord French.
His three brothers are in the Royal Navy - Commander Alex R. Palmer, Commander Edward M. Palmer, who was mentioned in despatches by General Sir Charles Monro in the "Gazette" of 31st October 1917, and Lieutenant Irving M Palmer, who won the Distinguished Service Cross in Mesopotamia in 1915.
