Legion Dinner at Warminster - Lord Bath Absent for First Time for Many Years
For the first time in many years the Marquis of Bath, "through a matter of urgency," failed to preside over the annual Armistice dinner arranged at Warminster by the local branch of the British Legion, and on the suggestion of Mr C.E. Kindersley, who proposed the toast of "The Chairman" Brigadier-General E. Harding-Newman, who presided, agreed to write to Lord Bath expressing the regret of Warminster ex-Servicemen that he was unable to be present.
"The Navy, Army and Air Forces," was proposed by Mr E.G. Durbin, chairman of Warminster Urban District Council. There were people, he said, who seemed to have a fixed idea that war was inevitable. That was a dangerous state of mind into which to get, as the idea eventually spread and affected government.
Captain C.H. Heath-Caldwell responding, described the Navy and the Merchant Service as two lifebelts which did a great deal of keep the Empire afloat. It had been said that it was impossible for a man to starve in England, but he knew of ex-Servicemen who were as near starvation as it was possible to be, and he hoped that justice would be done to those gallant men.
Brigadier-General R.F.A. Hobbs also responding, urged ex-Servicemen to break that prejudice against the Army which affected recruiting as in his opinion the Army offered as good a career for men as any other profession.
Other speakers were the Rev. H. Wake and Canaon J.S. Stuart.
