The silver challenge cup presented by a member, who wishes to remain anonymous, was competed for by the eight members who qualified by means of a series of six medal rounds - - -

Unfortunately an error crept into the report published last week of the club's annual meeting. Mr.P.J.Palfryman was elected captain (not President as stated) for the ensuing yea. The president, Major-General F.C.Heath-Caldwell C.B., was unanimously re-elected, and a hearty vote of thanks was passed on the valuable services he had rendered the club since its inception.

Talke and Butt Lane Hospital Committee

The officials and members of the Talke and Butt Lane Hospital Committee were entertained on Wednesday evening by the members of the Ladies Sub-Committee to a tea and social, held as a preliminary to the commencement of another year's work on behalf of the North Staffordshire Infirmary and kindred institutions.

The proceedings were held in the Primitive Methodist Schoolroom, Butt Lane. The company included Major-General F.C. Heath-Caldwell C.B., of Linley Hall, Mrs W.A. McDonald, Mr Hammersley (North Staffordshire Infirmary), Mr and Mrs J.W. Springewood, Mr and Mrs F. Welch, Mr W. Welch, Mr and Mrs O. Stanier, Mr C.J. Sutton, Mrs Morse, Mrs R. Smith, Mr George Thomas, Mrs Delves, Mrs C. Handcock, Mr Harry Hamnett, Mrs Maddock and Mrs Talkbot.

A substantial knife and fork tea was provided, after which an enjoyable hour was spent in friendly discourse.Major-General Heath-Caldwell proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the members of the Ladies' Committee for providing tea and spoke in eulogistic terms of the excellent work which the ladies had done in connection with the various efforts organised on behalf of the Infirmary.Mr Hammersley seconded the resolution and said that the Talke and Butt Lane Committee had without doubt done wonderful work on behalf of the Infirmary, which was greatly appreciated, and he hoped they would continue to carry on the work as successfully in the future as they had in the past. - - - (continues) - - -

Coldharbour's Outfall

The following letter was read from Messr. Tyler and Co., of Holborn Viaduct, land agents for Mr.Cuthbert Heath, of Anstie Grange:-

"We are instructed by Mr. C.E.Heath to object to a rating assessment which includes the sewage tanks and outfall works, which were constructed by him some little time ago for the service of certain houses in the village of Coldharbour, some of which were his property, and and we think it right that we should communicate with you on the subject, as it would appear to be a matter which should concern your District Council.

In the ordinary way, of course, such appliances as these should be provided by the local sanitary authority, but in this case we understand from Mr.Heath that he himself bore the expense of construction, amounting to something in the neighbourhood of £450.

Mr.Heath naturally feels that to be asked to pay rates on these sewage works, after having paid for work which should properly have been carried out by the sanitary authority, is inequitable. He would be quite willing for matters to remain as they are if he were not assessed for rating, but if it is intended to press this assessment, he feels that he should ask your Council to take over these works, and re-pay to him the value of them (not exceeding the original cost), which might be settled by an independent arbitrator, if necessary.

He informs us that they stand upon land belonging to his brother, to whom he pays an acknowledgment rent of 1s. per annum. We shall be glad to hear the view that your Council take of this matter, and you will, of course, understand that what we have said should be taken as quite without prejudice to the objection we shall be making to the rating assessment."

It was decided to refer the letter to the Assessment Committee.

5th North Staffords' Ball at Stoke.

Brilliant Function.
The Ball of the 5th Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's), which took place at the King's Hall, Stoke, on Friday evening, was not only the most brilliant social function in the history of the Regiment, but one of the smartest and most successful and enjoyable gatherings of the kind ever held in the district.

Nearly 600 applications for tickets were received, but the limit was fixed at 375, the result being that the room, though comfortably full, was not overcrowded. - - The guests included - - - Gen. and Mrs.Heath-Caldwell  - - - The following were amongst those who brought large parties:- Sir Phillip and Lady Baker-Wilbraham, Rode Hall, Cheshire; Major-General F.C.Heath-Caldwell, Linley Wood, Talke, Col.Sir George and Lady Vera Menzies, Col.H.Johnson brought a party of 16 from Roden Hall, Cheshire.
 - - -

It was a charming and handsome Ball. The officers wore mess dress (scarlet jackets and blue and "miniatures" (miniature medals) were worn by present and past officers. The ladies dresses were exceptionally beautiful, some longer, and some shorter, and there were numerous examples of the latest fashion of hair-dressing.

Young people abounded, but everybody united in paying homage to the charm and distinction of an older lady, Mrs.Heath-Caldwell whose old-world grace and lovely stiff white silk ball-dress, with her white hair and her own graciousness, made her a specially charming figure in the ball-room. - - -

Major General Frederick Crofton Heath-Caldwell C.B., of Linley Wood, Talke, one of the guests at the Ball, is the second son of the late Admiral Sir Leopold George Heath K.C.B., and married Constance Mary, daughter of Col. H. Helsham-Jones. Major-General Heath-Caldwell entered the Royal Engineers in 1877, and saw service in Egypt, the Soudan and South Africa. He took the additional name of Caldwell on succeeding his great-uncle, Mr.James Stamford Caldwell.

Surrey's New High Sheriff.

Mr. H.O.Serpell's successor in the shrievali of Surrey is Mr.Cuthbert Eden Heath O.B.E., who has lived at Anstie Grange, Holmwood near Dorking, for many years. The new High Sheriff is the third son of the late Admiral Sir Leopold Heath K.C.B., who also resided at Anstie Grange, is a member of Lloyds and is well known and highly esteemed in City financial circles.

In a recent reference in "The Times" City Editor stated that there was no greater authority than Mr.Cuthbert Heath on credit insurance, and, in fact, he anticipated a suggestion made recently by Mr.A.M.Samuel that the Government might assist schemes of credit insurance by assuming responsibility for the risk of catastrophe in certain contingencies.

Mr.Heath's business interests leave him little leisure for local affairs, but he follows with interest what goes on in the locality in which he lives, and we may be permitted to mention now that some years ago he made anonymously through the "Surrey Advertiser" a gift of £100 a year for two or three years for the furtherance of technical education in Dorking.

Talke and Butt Lane Hospital Saturday - Annual Parade and Fete - Attractive Spectacular Display

For the seventeenth year in succession the annual parade and fete, admirably organised by the Talke and Butt Lane Hospital Committee took place on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Ideal weather prevailed throughout the whole of the afternoon and evening, and the greatest interest was taken in the procession which from a spectacular standpoint was one of the best which have been seen in recent years.

The chief object is to raise funds for the North Staffordshire Royal Infirmary and the parade is one of a series of efforts which are held periodically for this purpose. Last year the Committee sent £100 to the Infirmary and also made grants to several convalescent homes. The officials for the present year are: President of the General Committee, Dr W.A. McDonald, Vice-President, Major-General F.C. Heath-Caldwell C.B., of Linley Hall, Talke; General Honorary Secretary, Mr John Swingewood; Assistant Hon. Secretary, Mr Ernest Birt; Hon. Treasurer, Mr George Thomas; Secretary of Musical Festival Committee, Mr John Boughey; President of Ladies Committee, Mrs W.A. McDonald; - - - (continues) - - -

Alsager Council - Question of Right of Way.

It was intimated that the Roads Committee had met General Heath-Caldwell with regard to the footpath leading from Talke Rd to Audley Road.

The footpath had been used only once during the last 15 years and before that time no one seemed to know when it was used.

The right of way had lapsed, and it was left for the Clerk to give his view on the matter.Mr Nelson said that if it were a highway footpath, the right of way could never lapse. It was a maxim of law, "Once a highway, always a highway." On the proposition of Mr Goss, seconded by Mr Ford, it was agreed that the Surveyor by instructed to erect two small stiles to mark the footpath.

Crewe Chronicle
A Disputed Right-of-Way.

The clerk read a letter from  General Heath-Caldwell with regard to the disputed right-of-way footpath that passes through his land.

He wanted proof, he said, that the path ever was a highway in the legal sense of the term. It was only a private right-of-way for the use of a few inhabitants. He had looked up old estate plans, and found that it never had been anything but an occupation road.
The Chairman: What can be done?

The Clerk: It is a question of evidence. You will have to go back to 1835.
The matter was left in the hands of the clerk.

The President - The toast of "The President" was entrusted to Mr J.J. Nelson, who spoke of their excellent landlord, who also happened to be the President of the club. This combination (landlord and President) lessened difficulties and worries with the income tax and rate collectors (laughter). The original club started on lines behind Settle's Hill. This died out, and many members migrated to Barthomley. Afterwards a move was made to meadows near Alsager Rd Station, and then disbandment followed. The present course at Linley was the best they had ever had, and it was one of the best in the district. They felt much indebted to their President, Major-General Heath-Caldwell (Applause.)The President, responding, said the club had not been troubled with the famous horse that once so upset them, and, therefore, he had not had to correspond with Mr Lynam for over a year. (laughter). He was gratified to know of the club's success, and no doubt the game brought Alsager together. He cordially thanked the company for the manner in which the toast had been received. - - - (continues) - - -
