An Expensive Election - A1 at Lloyd's - Hallmark of Integrity
World-wide Organisation began as a Coffee Shop.
The be "A1 at Lloyd's" has been the highest commercial recommendation for two centuries.
Figure of speech it has become, there is, in fact, a small company of men who are literally !1 at Lloyds, the 250-year old Exchange which keeps watch and ward over the world's risks. - -
There are 1,800 of them - 1,800 men whose initials on a scrap of paper are ample security for business exceeding FF500,000,000 each year. Every day, business that reaches over every one of the Seven Seas is transacted by those 1,800 without fuss or formality.

Fire insurance is an important of Lloyd's insurance now; and so it should be - it saved the life of that organisation in 1883, when Lloyd's was in the doldrums and heading for extinction through risk of mercantile insurance business.
A young man named Cuthbert Eden Heath, got three others to form a syndicate who re-insured his father's fire insurance business. That was the first non-maritime insurance Lloyd's had attempted, and at once, there was an outcry from the other and less enterprising members. Heath proved that the rules did not expressly forbid non-maritime transactions, and realisation of that fact, with all its implications, encouraged others to follow his example.

Sir Francis Joseph, opening the campaign, spoke of the food position, saying that slowly but surely, the inequalities of ratioing were being overcome. He was glad that a scheme was worked out for miners and other men doing hard manual work to have extra rations. They needed and deserved them.

Refuse Collection
Various complaints were received by letters on various aspects of refuse collection and salvage, while the Rev. C.H. Heath-Caldwell had written suggesting that the Council should organise its own collection with its own lorry.
The Clerk said he thought they would have to come to the conclusion that the Council would have to undertake its own collection; otherwise the Ministry of Supply would become very dissatisfied.
The Chairman pointed out that a scheme for direct collection by the Council had been turned down some time ago.
A report from the General Purposes Committee stated that an officer of the Ministry of Supply had expressed dissatisfaction at the amount of salvage collected.
The Council eventually agreed that the officers be instructed to formulate a scheme to be presented to the next meeting.
