Young Trainees began hospital work today.
A group of young trainee nurses and a visitor to Newcastle Nurses Home this morning had a common bond but only the visitor was aware of it. The visitor, Mrs.Penlington, of Brisbane, began her training there 24 years ago. The young nurses began theirs this morning.
"That brings back a host of memories," Mrs Penlington said to Matron Hall as the girls entered the lecture hall.
the ten trainees arrived at the Home yesterday and this morning they began elementary instruction before they entered the main wards.
Most of the girls are from the Newcastle district, but one, Nurse Heath-Caldwell, is a long way from home.
She arrived in Brisbane nine months ago from Wilshire (England), with a family whose children she had cared for on the voyage.
Deciding to remain in Australia and to become a nurse, she applied to Newcastle Hospital as the only relatives she has in this country live about 100 miles from Newcastle.

The Horn Fair
Faced at the last minute with the problem of providing "all the fun of the fair" without any pleasure fair, because fair proprietors had "let them down," the Horn Fair Committee did so well as to make the event on Saturday, a great success.
Rationing regulations still debarred the traditional roasting of a sheep on the village green, but horns of a "pre-victim" were forthcoming to be presented to the cricketer making most runs on the winning side. Lurgashall were Ebernoe's opponents in the match.
Ebernoe won 73 and 94 to 61 and 51.Mr.T.G.Stemp made 41 and so received the horns trophy from the hands of Admiral Sir Herbert Heath, who made a humorous speech. He deplored the fact that the good old days of sheep roasting had seemingly gone, but said there was a small hope that it might start again one day. Mr.Stemp said he hoped to win the horns again when 70. A tug-of-war between the cricket teams was also won by Ebernoe. There was a sports programme for the children. Side-shows were well patronised, and Petworth Town Band sportingly turned out to play at very short notice. Evening darts contests were popular and a skittles contest for a live pig was won by Mr.A.Dadswell

The King has approved the appointment of Mr.C.F.Cobbold as Governor and Mr.D.G.M.Bernard as Deputy Governor for five years from March1, 1949
"Discovered" - The City Editor, Oscar C.Hobson writes: Cameron Cobbold is the hero of a City "success story." Stemming from a well-known East Anglian brewing family and educated at Eton and King's, he had to leave Cambridge before finishing his course because his father's death deprived him of the means to take his degree.
He went into the City, at first with a firm of chartered accountants. Before long he was "discovered" by Mr.C.E.Heath, a well-known insurance broker, who took him into his firm and sent him in 1928 at the age of 24 to manage the Italian subsidiary of the Excess Insurance Company. - - - -
