George Heath's Common Place Book.
At the office. In French I am pretty perfect. I can read any book, and what is more, understand it, except technical words. I can read, without much difficulty, Italian novels and books in that language which are easy; and except my natural tongue, this, I believe is the extent of my knowledge as a linguist.
Reading Sallust at the rate of 100 lines an evening.
As to the law, that is my profession, and I cannot help continually improving. I shall say very little of it. Theoretically, I have a tolerably general knowledge, I believe, I may say without vanity, as much as most of my age; and even, I think I am on a par with J.Platt (ie Joshua P.) who is fifteen year older. In the practical part I know considerably more, which is more owing to my situation with Platt than any merit of my own. I am in the middle of the sixth book of Euclid, but have gone through it in a very slovenly manner, and at school dipped a little into Trigonometry; so much for Mathematics, except on recollection some time since, when the 'furia' was on me (of having) gone through simple equations in Algebra. My philosophical knowledge is merely superficial, having some ideas of Astronomy and read Chaptal, Lavoisier and Fourcroy on Chemistry.
I believe I know where a man's heart is, or at least where it ought to be, and perhaps the names of the chief bones and muscles; but no more of Anatomy.
I can play about fifty bars of the "Surprise" on the piano; as to drawing, the specimens will prove themselves. I have just begun landscape and modelling, one specimen of such of each of which I only I have done. This, I believe, is pretty near what I do know, and does not occupy much room. As to what I do not know, this, nor twenty such volumes would not contain it. 'I should not trouble myself to note them down.'

With view do beg Heath not to add furniture £100 to the money for the share - but to let me have the advance. The furniture security is quite safe. Of the £50 you advanced on the Note - Mrs.Hall has £30, and Miss Palmer £10 - Hall also had a draft for £20 dated today but which I suppose will not be presented 'till Monday - it will be the devil not to be answered. Send it out of Heath's advance if you succeed as I trust you will and to me £50 at H.Scott's Esq. Holywell, Bishop's Waltham, Hants by this day's Post . . .

Many prints of Lord Nelson have been done very successfully. The opportunity had not been neglected by Heath who has just produced an excellent Portrait of the Naval Hero after a most correct likeness painted by Abbott since Lord Nelson returned home.
The Engraving is in the dotted manner, but executed with uncommon force and precision

Mrs John Singleton Copley to her daughter in Boston
Mr Heath is going on with the engraving of Mr.Adams portrait but he is much in want of some painting or sketch that will give some idea of his present character; we understand that he is much altered from the likeness your father took of him.
He hears that there are several pictures of him in Boston and will be obliged if Mr.Greene will get some person to make a copy of one of them, and, if it could be obtained, a sketch from Mr.Adams' hand, in sort anything that would give an idea of his present character, hair &c. He thinks an inferior artist can do either, and the sooner they can be procured the more will be the advantage of finishing the print.
A manuscript note in the Folger Library states '£112.17.6 received from Mr.Heath, cash lent by him to pay Mr.Bannister's Arrears of last season, and this on October 30, 1801.'
In editing Sheridan's letters, G.Price remarks "Sheridan was friendly with James Heath (1757-1834) engraver but appears to refer here to one Heath, a broker.' This is unlikely, as John Bannister was one of James Heath's oldest friends, and he was presumably advancing Bannister his unpaid wages at Drury Lane so as to help out without Bannister knowing where the money was coming from. There are other cases where James Heath helped friends such as the artist Thomas Stothard, with money when in need.
