Heath's Shakspeare. (sic) - 22 plates engraved by James Heath after Thomas Stothard R.A. and Henry Fuseli R.A. plate size about 31 x 20cm. Published by G.G.J. and J.Robinson (1802-4), then John Stockdale (1807), J.Murray, J.Heath and W.Woodman( 1817) and H.McLean (1818). Six volumes. Originally published in parts between 1802-04 (No.2 Two Gentlemen of Verona, No.6 Comedy of Errors etc) at one guinea each; the plates were also sold separately by James Heath from his house at 15 Russell Place.
The project was launched with a prospectus in 1796; No.7. and 21. were exhibited as first impressions at the Royal Academy in the same year, and No.9 and 6. were also exhibited in 1802 and 1804 respectively. The work was evidently intended to rival Boydell's Shakspeare, with finally appeared in 1802 after 16 years of gestation, and the finished plates are mainly dated 1802, with the notable exception of No.12, which is dated '1 Aug. 1803' and is only to be found in Stockdale's edition of 1807; Stockdale seems to have taken over the publication (in a much more luxurious edition) when Robinson's got into financial difficulties in December 1804. James Heath had originally hoped to use some of Boydell's artists from whom to engrave but his idea was thwarted by Boydell so that in the event only Stothard and Fuseli did so. The McLean edition (1818) was bound up with Bartolozzi's plates illustrating Milton, and sold for 9 guineas.
Pickering issued a revised edition with the plates reduced to 6 x 4 size by Augustus Fox in 1825-6.
