Saturday 1 January 1785
Shrewsbury Chronicle

To the Subscribers of Bell's Edition of Shakespeare's Works, Which is now dedicated by permission To His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales.

Having postponed the appearance of my First Number longer than was proposed, it is incumbent on me to account for the necessary delay. Flattered as I have been by  most numerous subscription, and other testimonies of public approbation, I feel myself urged by duty and gratitude, not to lose any possible opportunity of improving my plan - for that purpose, I have visited Paris, inspected the typographical offices there; and, I trust, have gained some advantages of my observations. I have engaged the following eminent artists to assist in embellishing my publication, viz. the celebrated Mareau le jeane, to make vignettes drawings for the plays - - - continues - - -

I speak from conviction, having been honoured at Versailles with the subscriptions of the King and Queen of France, Monsieur and Comte A'Artois, with an assurance also of having the Work countenanced by many persons of fashion and consequence in that kingdom. Gratifying as these distinctions must naturally be to my mind, yet on my return home they retired into a pleasing sahde on the meeting with the patronage of My Prince. The sanction of His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales has spurred me on to make still greater exertions, to spirit up the following artists in England, who are now engaged to transcend their usual merit, viz. Loutherbourg, Ciprioni and Ramberg, as designers, and Bertalozzi, Sherwin, Heath and Hall as engravers; also to improve my paper to encrease the number of my embellishments, and to distinguish this Edition of Shakespeare by every possible mark of accuracy and elegance-  - - continues. - - - -Most obedient, and grateful, humble servant, John Bell. British Library, Strand. Dec.16 1784.

25 February 1785 - Will - with codicil 6 February 1787. - date and place of proof not known,

Joseph is described as "of the Town of Nottingham, Gent." He left various properties in the town to to his wife Mary. To his sister, Mrs.Stanley, "his silver cup marked B/IE.

He mentions in addition to nearer relatives, his cousin Hannah Wood of Lenton; Denis Clipsom of Market Harboro', hosier; Hannah, wife of Mr.Lewis of London; and Mary, wife of Mr.John Littleton, watchmaker of London.

Also mentioned but not specifying the relationship, William Clipsom of Kettering, joiner and cabinet maker; John Clipsom of Kettering and Thomas Kestin of Great Bowden, co. Leinester, farmer.

He also made a bequest to Mr.Plumb, minister of Castle Gate Meeting in Nottingham, and to the debt on the house recently erected for him in Castle Gate by some of the Protestant Dissenters.

Joseph Heath evidently had no issue.

Mr Boydell states that the Picture Heath (Death of Major Pierson) is now to be seen in his Gallery, with a small one, the size of the intended Print, as a companion to the Death of Lord Chatham; and he further assures those who honour him with their names that they may depend upon fine impressions.

Saturday 25 June 1785
Dublin Evening Post

This Day is published, the Tragedy of Hamlet, Being the fifth Number of Bell's Edition of Shakespeare's Works; which are now printing complete and correct form the Text of Samuel Johnson and George Stevens, in a stile of incomparable elegance and beauty.

The Embellishments for this Number are a Vignette Scene Print, neatly engraved by Heath, from an original Drawing, made on purpose by Loutherbourg; and a characteristic Print, representing an admirable Likeness of Mr.Kemble, as Hamlet.

The Work, imprinted on superfine silky paper, with a Burgeois letter, cast and delicately dressed on purpose, by Frys and Co. and not by Caston, as he has been vainly contending for the merit of. The size is adapted for the pocket; each Number sells for 1s.7½d. - four copies are also taken off on ordinary paper, with ordinary embellishments; these are sold at 8d. each.

The Work is delivered rigidly in the order of application for (comfort?) the advantages, therefore to subscribers, must be obvious to every person of taste and curiosity.
