Dear Mrs Slack,
I have received your telephone message and am sorry to know that your arrangements for William's holidays have broken down. I quite thought that you were having him to stay with you during holiday periods.
I have not yet enquired whether we might have a vacancy at WIng Lodge but I feel quite certain that all the vacancies have been taken up for this Easter, so that I doubt very much whether I can be at all helpful in this direction.
I am wondering whether you would like to get in touch with Mrs Carrington, 34 Jubilee Road, Darnley, as I think she might be able to help you out. A few months ago Mrs Carrington very kindly took in one of our lads for a holiday period and the lad was quite happy with her.
You could either write to Mrs Carrington or go to see her by appointment, and if you wish you may say that I have suggested her to you.
Yours sincrely,
Child Care Officer.

Dear Mrs Sturt,
Re - William Slack (1.6.44) - WIth Mrs Carrington, 34 Jubilie Rd, Downley.
Thank you for your letter of the 2nd May 1957. William's mother was asked to remove him from the Royal Alexandra and Albert School, Reigate, Surrey at the end of last term, and after having him to stay with her at the farm where she lives and works in Marlow, she has placed him temporarily with Mrs Carrington at the above address.
Mrs Slack states that the reason she was asked to remove William from the school was that she had failed to keep up her payments for his maintenance, but she suspects that William's misbehaviour at school was a factor in the Headmaster's decision.
She seems, however, to have received no complaints about the boy's behaviour from the Headmaster, but says she knows from what the boy has told her that he was frequently in trouble.
Since William went to the Royal Alexandra & Albert School in September 1955, he has spent school holidays with his mother and she has found him very difficult to handle. She says that he goes out of his way to be rude to her and her employer, and people in the district generally. He can be very abusive and frequently uses foul language and is apparently very aggressive towards his sister Susan.
Mrs Slack readily acknowledges that the boy is beyond her control and says it is quite impossible for him to live with her.
In view of the fact that the mother is quite unable to control William I wonder whether it would be possible for you to admit the boy to one or your children's homes if my Committee accepted financial responsibility for him. It might then be possible for his father to visit him fairly frequently and ot built up a relationship with the boy.
My assistant has discussed this with Mrs Slack and she says that the boy's father has more control over him than anyone else.
I shall be pleased to have your reply as soon as possible.
Yours sincerely,
Children's Officer.

to Mr E.A.Corner Esq., The Secretary, Royal Alexandra & Albert School, Reigate, Surrey.
Dear Mr Corner.,
Re. William Slack (1.6.44) WIng Lodge, Wing, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.
Shortly after this boy left your school at the end of last term he was placed by is mother in a foster home in High Wycombe but had to leave in a short time as the foster mother was unable to handle him.
Mother was unable to have William with her and in consequence he was received into the care of this County Council and is at present at our Boys' Home at Wing.
I have been in touch with the Children's Officer for Leicester, since William's father resides in that city, and in her letter of the 28th May, Mrs Stuart informs me that she has been in touch with you and learns that William was discharged because of his mother's failure to contribute towards the cost of his maintenance.
It is quite impossible for William to remain at Wing Lodge for this Home is to be closed in a matter of a few weeks, and I am wondering whether you would consider re-admitting the boy to your school if my Committee accepted financial responsibility for him.
I have a copy of Mr Jeffrey's report dated 23 May 1957, from which it appears that after an initial period when William was found rather difficult there was a gradual improvement in his behaviour and he seemed to be settling into the life of your school.
I therefore think it would be very much in William's interest if you could consider re-admitting him.
Yours sincerely,
Children's OFficer.

Dear Mrs Stuart,
Re - William Slack (1.6.44) - Wing Lodge, WIng, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.
I thank you for your letter of the 28th May 1957, and I am most grateful for the trouble you have been to in connection with this boy.
A few days ago he had to leave the foster home in which his mother had placed him as the foster mother was unable to handle him, and since it was quite impossible for the lad to reside with his mother I admitted him to our Boy's Home at WIng.
I am very surprised that the Royal Alexandra & Albert School discharged William because of his mother's failure to contribute towards his maintenance without first consulting me, since I was instrumental in getting him to the school.
I have now written to the school secretary asking whether they will consider re-admitting the lad if we accept financial responsibility for him and I will write to you again as soon as I have his reply.
Yours sincerely,
Children's Officer.

Collected William from the Slough Home and took him to the Royal Alexandra and Albert School. When we met, Bill said he did not wish to return to the Royal A. & A. School as he did not like people who "bunged him out." It transpired that he was never told why he had to leave. The lad appears quite intelligent but very capable of being awkward and truculent.

Dear Miss Stuart.
Re - WIlliam Slack (1.6.44). WIng Lodge, Wing, Leighton Buzzard, Beds.
Further to my letter of the 1st June, I have now received a reply from the Secretary of the Royal Alexandra and Albert School in which he says his Committee will consider William's re-admission on the 17th June 1957. The Secretary states that in asking for William's withdrawal they were not influenced only by the mother's failure to meet her financial obligations, but also by the fact that the lad's behaviour was unsatisfactory.
In view, however, of the fact that I have offered to be financially responsible for the boy at the school the lad's re-admission can be considered.
I will write to you again when I hear further from the school.
Yours sincerely,
Children's Officer.

Dear Mrs Slack,
You will be pleased to know that William is now back at the Royal Alexandra &
Albert School and I hope he settles down and does well.
I realise you are unable to have him to stay with you during holidays but I would like to impress upon you the importance of keeping in touch with him regularly by post, and visiting him whenever you can.
We have written to the Children's Officer in Leicester asking her to find out whether it would be possible for Bill to spend his holidays with his grandmother or whether his father may have any suggestions to make, and I am writing to ask whether you can make any suggestions yourself.
I have no doubt that we shall be able to make some permanent arrangement for Bill, but we might be in difficulties this summer as there is so little time available to make arrangements, so that I would be pleased to hear from you if you have any suggestions at all as to where Bill can go.
I think that you know that our Boy's Home at Wing has been closed and I am afraid all our other Children's Homes will be full.

Dear Miss Stuart,
Re - William Slack, 1.6.44 (your ref. DMB/MM), Royal Alexandra & Albert School, Gatton Park, Reigate, Surrey.
Further to my letter of the 7th June, 1957 you will be pleased to know that William returned to the Royal Alexandra & Albert School on 21st of this month.
I am now anxious to make some arrangements for William's school holidays and since it is impossible for the mother to have the boy with her in Marlow, I am wondering whether the lad's paternal grandmother might be willing to have him for at least part of the time during each school holiday, or whether the father might have any suggestions.
Although I have not yet received the official notification I believe that this year's summer holidays begin on 25th July and I shall therefore be pleased if you could have William's grandmother and father interviewed in the near future.
Yours sincrely,
Children's Officer.

Visited: saw Mrs Slack. She appeared very worried indeed about William and was most anxious to find a solution to his problems. She, however, is quite unable to see what to do.
The lad was sent home by Mrs Carrington and a letter followed in which Mrs Carrington complained that he was unbearable "cheeky." Said she had taken a good deal from WIlliam before sending him home.

Dear Mr Corner,
re William Slack (1.6.44)
I am very pleased indeed that your Committee felt able to re-admit William to your school and I hope he settles down and does well.
I have now to make some permanent arrangements for his school holidays as it will not be possible for him to return to his mother and I am making enquiries to see whether the lad could spend his holidays with his paternal grandmother who lives in Leicester, or whether his father, who lives in the same town, has any suggestions to make.
If the grandmother and father are unable to be helpful I may be in some difficulty this summer holiday owing to the fact that our boy's home at Wing has been closed, and our other Children's Homes will be full.
If I am in difficulties is it likely that you would know of a foster home where William could go for at least part of the time?
Yours sincerely,
Children's Officer.

Thank you for your letter of the 5th July 1957. I have as yet been able to make no arrangements for William's holiday, or any part of it, and I have not yet heard whether the boy's paternal grandmother or father are able to have him for any of the time.
